A feature of the treatment of various bacterial diseases is the use of antibiotics. But in recent years, microorganisms have become increasingly resistant to such drugs. Therefore, new generation drugs are created that are more effective than those already known. Veterinary care is also trying to use new developments. After all, often the diseases in humans and animals are the same, so they need similar medicines.
One of the most effective in recent years has become the veterinary drug "Cobactan". Instructions for use describe it as a last-generation antibiotic, spared many of the shortcomings of old medicines. It is used most often for the treatment of various infectious and inflammatory diseases of farm animals. But the fact that the drug almost does not cause side effects and is easily tolerated allows it to be used in cats and dogs.
What is Cobactan?
Instructions for use describe it as an antibiotic of the cephalosporin group . This is the first representative of the 4th generation of these antibiotics.
The medicine is available in sealed 50 and 100 ml vials and is an opaque, oily suspension of white color. The main active ingredient of the drug is cefkin. In 1 ml of the drug it contains 25 mg. It is located there in the form of cefkinoma sulfate. In addition, ethyl oleate is included in the preparation as an auxiliary component.
Features of the active substance
Recently, many microorganisms have begun to adapt to antibacterial drugs. They began to produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that destroys antibiotic molecules. Bacteria began to change so that it became harder for drugs to get inside. Therefore, antibiotics of the latest generations are more resistant to beta-lactamases.
One of them is "Cobactan". Its constituent cefkinoma sulfate easily penetrates the cell wall of any microorganism due to its bipolar structure. A small concentration of the drug is sufficient for exposure to bacteria, therefore it has low toxicity. The benefits of "Cobactan" also include the cure of not only the underlying disease, but also concomitant infections and inflammations. Therefore, it is the drug of choice in difficult cases, with the ineffectiveness of other antibiotics, and also when it is impossible to accurately determine the cause of the disease.
Pharmacological properties of "Cobactan"
Cefkin is active against most gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as anaerobic microorganisms: salmonella, staphylococcus, streptococcus and others. Even those that are insensitive to other antibiotics die under its influence. This is due to the special effect of cefkinoma on the cell walls of bacteria - it disrupts their synthesis and destroys cell membranes. Because of this, microorganisms quickly die, not having time to adapt to the drug. Therefore, it is active against beta-lactamases and penicillinase.
The main active ingredient "Cobactan" is rapidly distributed in all tissues of the body. Especially penetrates it into the bronchi and lungs. After a few minutes, the drug begins to act. And the therapeutic concentration of cefkinoma is maintained throughout the day.
The drug is excreted by the kidneys in an almost unchanged form, since it binds poorly to plasma proteins. In addition, the positive properties of cefkinoma include the fact that it does not enter the gastrointestinal tract and therefore does not cause dysbiosis.
When to use "Cobactan"
Most often, treatment of animals with this drug occurs on farms and other agricultural enterprises.
"Cobactan" is very effective for such diseases:
- acute and bacterial mastitis;
- various respiratory diseases;
- ulcers on hooves, panaritium, purulent dermatitis and necrobacillosis;
- salmonellosis;
- colibacteriosis in calves.
But recently, the drug has become popular in city veterinary clinics. And quite often they use "Cobactan" for cats and dogs. It is especially advisable for severe infections in which other antibiotics do not help:
- acute respiratory infections;
- meningitis, arthritis;
- dermatitis, erysipelas and other skin diseases.
Contraindications and side effects
Can all animals be prescribed "Cobactan"? The instruction for use notes that the drug does not cause side effects and is tolerated quite well by any animals. Even accidental overdose does not lead to negative consequences. In addition, Cobactan does not contain preservatives or other additives, therefore it rarely causes allergic reactions. But still, pet owners should use this medicine only as directed by a doctor. It is forbidden to treat animals that are sensitive to beta-lactam antibiotics and cephalosporins, the drug "Cobactan". In some cases, a local injection reaction may develop in the form of tissue edema, which disappears after a couple of weeks.
"Cobactan": instructions for use
The drug is administered intramuscularly once a day. Cattle are prescribed 2 ml of the drug per 50 kg of weight. In some cases, for example in the treatment of pigs or horses, the dose may be 2 ml per 25 kg of animal weight. 3-5 days of using the drug are enough to cope with the infection. Treatment should be carried out strictly according to the instructions, without missing a single injection.
An injection is preferably done deep into the muscle tissue. Veterinary care for pets can be provided in special hospitals. After examining the animal, the doctor prescribes injections of the drug. Most often, the dosage for cats and dogs is this: 0.5 ml per 5 kg of weight.
Pet treatment
Very often in the treatment of bacterial infections, veterinarians prescribe "Cobactan". Its price is quite high - from 1.5 to 2 thousand rubles, so it is better to do injections in the clinic. After all, the owner of one pet still does not use the entire bottle, and a month after opening the drug becomes unsuitable for treatment. Injection is done once a day, which is very convenient.
It is better if the injection will be done by a specialist, since the drug has some features:
- every time you need to change the injection site so that tissue swelling does not develop;
- it is necessary to accurately calculate the dosage of the drug depending on the disease and the size of the animal - most often it is 0.1 ml per kilogram of weight;
- It is advisable not to miss the injection time and do it after 24 hours.
"Cobactan" for dogs and cats is prescribed in the following cases:
- in the treatment of urethritis and cystitis;
- with gastroenteritis, enteritis, enterocolitis;
- the drug is very effective for pneumonia, bronchitis and tracheitis;
- for the treatment of postoperative complications and skin infections;
- with otitis media, peritonitis and even sepsis;
- for the treatment of inflammatory joint diseases.
special instructions
1. After treating cattle and pigs, meat can be used as food no earlier than a week later. A person can drink milk from dairy cows only after 3-5 days from the moment of the last injection.
2. The drug requires special storage conditions: in unopened packaging, separate from food. After opening the suspension is suitable for use within a month.
3. In order not to develop a local reaction to the administration of the drug, it is necessary to change the injection sites each time.
4. The effectiveness of the drug is reduced when used in conjunction with other antibiotics of bacteriostatic action.
