The Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater is the most famous in our country. His repertoire is very rich and diverse. Based on the name of the theater, we can conclude that it is the largest in Russia. But actually it is not. The largest theater in terms of area is not at all.
The birth of the Bolshoi Theater
Prince P.V. Urusov was the only person in Moscow who was allowed to maintain a theater troupe and conduct recreational activities: concerts, performances, and so on. He received permission from the governor himself. For his troupe, he was obliged to build a building in which all the performances were shown. The prince soon went broke. His companion Medox received the right to own the troupe. The obligation to build a building for performances also fell on his shoulders.

Medox bought from Prince Rostotsky a plot of land on Petrovskaya Street. It was here that he built the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia. It took only 5 months. The building design was designed by architect Christian Rosberg. The first name of the theater is Petrovsky. Its opening took place on December 30, 1780. The Bolshoi Theater of Russia presented its first performance. The premieres were very successful, but over time, attendance fell, profits decreased, actors began to leave the troupe. Medox was deprived of the right to own the theater. The building passed into the hands of the state. The theater became known as the Imperial.
Reconstruction of 1821
After 25 years of its existence, the theater suffered a fire. Almost everything burned down, only a part of the bearing walls was preserved. In 1821, the restoration of the theater began. Osip Beauvais is an architect who was engaged in reconstruction. The Bolshoi Theater of Russia was revived for several years. The building reconstruction project was developed by architect Andrei Mikhailov, and Osip Bove revised it. The restoration of the theater was completed in late 1824. In January 1825, the renovated building was opened with the Sandrilon ballet. The theater received a new name, now it has become known as the Big Petrovsky.
New life after the fire of 1853
Almost 30 years after the reconstruction, a fire broke out again in the theater, which did not stop for two days. The Bolshoi Theater of Russia burned down almost all of it, only bearing walls remained from it . In the fire, all costumes, decorations, notes, musical instruments were destroyed. This time, the restoration of the building was done by Alberto Cavos.
The theater reopened its doors to the audience on August 20, 1856. Its name has changed, now it has become the Great Imperial. The first performance played in the restored building was the opera by V. Bellini “Puritans”. Alberto Cavos made a redevelopment of the hall, thanks to which the acoustics in it became one of the best in the whole world.
Bolshoi Theater today
The State Bolshoi Theater of Russia in the XX and XXI centuries underwent a number of reconstructions. Now the building, both outside and inside, shines with all the colors. The first production of the theater was the opera Ivan Susanin by Mikhail Glinka. In 2005, the building was reconstructed, and now it is one of the most modern theaters in terms of equipment. Its area is 40 663 square meters, and the volume is 294 340 cubic meters. For its huge size, the building was nicknamed the Siberian Colosseum. Its dome is so large that it can accommodate the Bolshoi Theater of Moscow.
