Doctors quite often diagnose the curvature of the nasal septum. What kind of ailment is this? Does it have serious consequences?
To begin with, the nasal septum is a plate dividing the
nasal cavity. One part consists of cartilage, and the other is represented by a thin bone. It should immediately be said that there are no direct septum of the nose. All of them are curved, in other words, with a comb. Sometimes such a crest can interfere with breathing, that is, close a narrow hole that leads into the maxillary sinus. If it does not pose any danger, then correction is not required.
Causes of nasal septum deformity
What causes curvature?
- First of all, I want to note an interesting fact: the nasal septum increases in size throughout life. Its individual parts grow at different speeds. Therefore, the curvature of the nasal septum can be caused by age.
- This ailment is sometimes caused by physiological prerequisites - the uneven development of cartilage and bone tissue. Typically, this type of disease is diagnosed in adolescence.
- Compensatory curvature of the nasal septum occurs in cases where foreign bodies, such as polyps, press on the cartilage.
- Mechanical deformation. All kinds of injuries usually provoke her. In men, such a curvature occurs 3 times more often.
Curvature of the nasal septum: symptoms
Signs of pathology can be either pronounced or not expressed at all. It all depends on the degree of deformation of the plate. Correction of the curvature of the nasal septum is justified only if it interferes with breathing. Among the main symptoms, experts call the following:
- Dryness in the nasal cavity.
- Labored breathing.
- Snoring in a dream.
- In some cases, partial hearing loss.
- Common diseases of adjacent organs: rhinitis, sinusitis, sinusitis.
- With mechanical curvature, a change in the shape of the nose.
Treatment
As you can see, the curvature of the nasal septum can lead to many unpleasant consequences. An operation, the price of which varies from 25 to 40 thousand rubles, is carried out only in 26% of cases. The prerequisites for its implementation are:
- Frequent inflammatory diseases.
- Pronounced labored breathing.
- Strong snoring.
- Bleeding from the nose.
Today, there are 2 ways to treat an ailment.
The first is septoplasty. This is a surgical procedure using endoscopic technology. The operation lasts no more than an hour, and it will take only 1 day to stay in the hospital.
The second way is laser treatment. It has many limitations, but despite this it is used quite often. Its essence is that certain sections of the nasal plate are heated to the desired temperature and are fixed with tampons in the correct position. The patient practically does not feel any discomfort. The operation is often performed on an outpatient basis. Such treatment is effective if the cartilaginous part is curved.
As a rule, within a week after the operation, the patientโs symptoms disappear and breathing is restored.
So, do not bypass the ENT doctorโs office, because the curvature of the nasal septum makes life difficult.
