The fame and popularity of other actors is sometimes not associated with exceptional giftedness, but rather is due to numerous scandalous incidents with their participation. However, fortunately, there were and are artists who came to art not for fame and not for the sake of earning, but by vocation. One of them was Gleb Glebov. His biography is an example of sincere and devoted service to the theater.
Birth and early years
On May 11, 1899, a joyful event occurred in the family of a railway official. Gleb Sorokin was born in the Kherson province, in the city of Voznesensk. True, this biographical detail may not be entirely accurate; Voskresensk (Moscow province) is mentioned in other sources.
A creative pseudonym will appear later, but for now, the boy, like all his peers, is in high school. In connection with revolutionary hard times, primary education was delayed, and a person graduated from high school only at the age of 21. After that, an attempt was made to get a “reliable” specialty, and the student Sorokin studied for a whole year (1920-1921) at the Odessa Polytechnic. However, the craving for art took its toll.
In 1921, Sorokin takes the pseudonym Gleb Glebov. His biography as an artist begins in the Odessa drama, where he served for two years. Now it is almost impossible to find out what the theater’s repertoire was at that time. But the troupe carefully preserves the memory of what was once in the walls of the theater to them. Ivanova, on Grecheskaya Street, was played by Glebov and other national artists of the USSR, photos of which were hung in the hall.
In 1923, the leadership of the republican cultural enlightenment decided to "strengthen" the provincial Ukrainian theaters, and some Odessa actors were transferred to Nikolaev. Among them was Gleb Glebov. The actor’s biography is associated with this southern city, and later with Voznesensky, where he worked in the Russian Drama Theater until 1926.
1st Belorussian Drama Theater
Then there was Belarus. At the Minsk Theater Yanki Kupala, he worked since 1926, and with the outbreak of war led the troupe in evacuation. Like all Soviet people, the theater team did everything for the front and victory. The front-line brigade was actively speaking to the fighters, in which Gleb Glebov was the leading actor . His biography is inextricably linked with this team, the artistic direction of which until 1947 he carried out. He played a hundred and a half roles, and the most stellar were Kroplya from "Konstantin Zaslonov" and Tulyag from the play "Who laughs last." A variety of genres is a clear sign of the actor’s versatile giftedness.
Movie and radio roles
The lucky people who saw Gleb Glebov on stage will forever remember his sparkling sense of humor and acting skills, characteristic of the old theater school. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer witnesses of creative triumph, and the modern viewer has to judge the artist by the films that have survived to this day. “Eastern Corridor”, “Our Neighbors”, “Konstantin Zaslonov”, “First Tests”, “Strict Woman”, “Polesie Legend” - these are just some of the films in which bright and memorable images were created thanks to the efforts of Glebov. Particularly successful was the role of Judge Demyan Demyanovich in the film adaptation of Gogol’s novel “How Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich.” In total, Glebov starred in twenty films.
He also worked on the radio. The wonderful diction and expressive manner of reading were remembered by both adults and especially children, for whom he wrote wonderful tales.
Gleb Glebov died in 1967 in Minsk, which became his hometown for him. This actor had many awards, he was twice awarded the Stalin Prize (II degree), since 1948 - People's Artist of the USSR, twice awarded the Order of Lenin and twice more - Order of the Red Banner of Labor. But the main reward for him was the sincere love of the audience.
