The beginning of the history of Rostov-on-Don dates back to the time of the Azov campaigns of Peter I. Having passed through centuries, the city has preserved a rich cultural heritage. Moreover, along with historical and architectural monuments, works of art are highly appreciated here.
Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts consists of two departments. One of them is located in the historical heart of the city and occupied an old building on Pushkinskaya street. Those who want to join the world of art can visit permanent and temporary exhibitions, and even look at the museum store. The museum collection has more than 6 thousand exhibits.
Museum History
The fund of the museum was formed for a long time. At the beginning of the last century, a society of fine arts appeared, where paintings from different parts of the country were presented. Later they entered personal collections and only after the revolution enriched the museum fund.
For some time it functioned as part of other museums, in particular, the Rostov Museum of Local Lore. The independent life of the art museum began in 1938. During the war years, the collection was evacuated to Pyatigorsk, but this did not save her from plunder. A special headquarters of Rosenberg was created, which was engaged in the sending of valuable art objects to Germany. After the war, paintings began to return, but, unfortunately, the complete collection could not be restored.
A year after the end of the war, the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts began to function again, but already at the premises of the art school. After 12 years, he occupied the house of lawyer Petrov, designed by the architect Doroshenko at the end of the XIX century. The building is one of the architectural monuments of Rostov-on-Don. In 2009, a department was opened on Chekhov Lane.

Not without the antique plot of the work of Pierre Andrieux. The theme of German art will reveal the portraits of artists Han von Aachen and Georg Demare.
Art of the East
The Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts has a rare oriental exhibition. Particular attention is paid to china. The collection contains rare works of porcelain related to the period of the reign of the Qin Dynasty.
Among later exhibits, bronze casting and rock crystal snuff boxes (XVIII – XIX centuries) stand out. A unique vase made using the technique of carving for varnish is another property of the museum on Chekhov. The turn of the 19th – 20th centuries is represented by ivory carvings.
The Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts will introduce visitors to other countries of the East, in particular, Japan. The brightest part of the exhibition is the small netsuke sculptures. This miniature pendant was an integral attribute of the national men's costume. The famous tanto knife complements the collection. Although the tanto was considered a samurai dagger, women wore it as a weapon of self-defense. The dagger was inserted into an elegantly decorated bone frame, and sometimes disguised as a fan.
