The drug "Pirantel" is a medication of anthelmintic (anthelmintic) action. The main principle of its action is damage to the muscles of parasites, blocking their motor abilities and, thus, ensuring the elimination of helminths naturally from the gastrointestinal tract. The greatest effect can be obtained from the drug if it is used in the early stages of the development of parasites.
The drug is available in the form of a suspension and tablets. Suspensions are mainly used to treat children.
The medicine "Pirantel" (tablets) is prescribed for the following diseases:
- ascariasis - occurs as a result of the activity in the human body of intestinal parasitic worms - ascaris;
- enterobiosis - caused by the activity of pinworms;
- hookworm - occurs due to the presence of parasitic nematode worms in the body and leads to a sharp decrease in the number of red blood cells in the blood;
- necatorosis.
The drug "Pirantel" (tablets) - instructions for use
Used orally once a day during breakfast or immediately after it. It is advisable to pre-chew the tablets for faster absorption by the body and drink with a small amount of water.
Doses For the treatment of enterobiasis and ascariasis, the drug is taken once in a ratio of 10 mg per kilogram of patient weight; children aged 12 years and adults - at least three tablets (750 mg). If you exceed 75 kg, you need to drink at least four tablets at a time.
Children from six months to two years old can take half a tablet (125 mg) of the drug, from two to six years - one whole tablet (250 mg). At the age of 6 to 12 years, two tablets (500 mg) are taken.
With helminthiases such as necatorosis and hookworm, as well as with combined invasions (simultaneous damage to two or more types of parasites), the Pyrantel drug (tablets) is prescribed in a different dosage. In this case, the medicine should be taken at a rate of 10 mg per kilogram of patient weight for three days, or 20 mg per kilogram of body weight for two days. With ascariasis, it is possible to use a single dose of 5 mg per kilogram of patient weight.

With enterobiosis (pinworms), in order to avoid re-infection, experts recommend repeating the course of taking the drug three to four weeks after the first treatment session.
The prices of Pirantel medicine vary depending on the choice of a particular pharmacy and the trade margin it has adopted . Also, the cost of the drug depends on the proposed dosage and form of release (suspension or tablets).
If the patient is prescribed the drug "Pyrantel" (tablets), the instructions should be read before starting treatment. The drug is quite easily tolerated by patients, very rarely, the occurrence of side effects that occur immediately after the end of the course of treatment can be observed. Despite the relative neutrality of the drug "Pirantel", there are a number of limitations in taking this medication.
