Plot
The film has a small prologue. Early in the morning at the bus station, Kind Cat tells a stranger a long story. About twenty years ago, someone named Max found out that one of the horses at the races would be pumped with dope. He arrives at the hippodrome with his son, leaves him in the car and puts all the money taken from very serious people on this horse. Just before the finish she falls. Max is tortured by the people of the mafia, which owns the hippodrome, and brutally killed. His wife dies (she is shot right in the house) and his son, taken away for reprisal outside the city.
Having finished his story, Good Cat kills the listener and leaves. Around this time, Slevin arrives in New York. A series of failures came in his life: trouble at work, parting with a girl. To top it all off, he was left without an apartment. His friend Nick offers to stay with him. On the street, a young man is robbed and broken in a fight. The apartment is empty, and Slevin thinks that Nick has gone somewhere. He meets a friend's neighbor, Lucy's girlfriend. She is worried that Nick has been gone for a long time, and decides to start looking for him.
Not having time to relax after the flight, Slevin was visited by strangers. They take him for Nick, and without the stolen documents the protagonist cannot prove that they are mistaken. He is brought to the Boss and he reports that Nick owes him an impressive amount of money, almost one hundred thousand dollars. Since he personally did not see him, he takes Slevin for his friend. The boss offers a deal - the main character kills the son of his worst enemy, and the debt will be forgiven.
On the same day, a young man comes from the Rabbi and is invited to meet with him. He tells Slevin that he and Boss were once best friends, but then had a falling out and became deadly enemies. The protagonist, who is still mistaken for Nick, finds out that his friend owes a debt to the Rabbi too. The debt will be forgiven in exchange for a service - killing the Boss. And again, Slevin is forced to agree - he does not have that kind of money, and Nick, it seems, decided to simply disappear from the city, fearing reprisal due to debts.
