Theater History

Odessa became a successful and wealthy city in the second half of the 19th century. Russian theater appeared at this time. Its first building was wooden. In 1873 it burned down. But Odessa could not imagine herself without a theater. The artists continued their performances, but they came to play on the stage, as in a booth.

A year later, the Russian Theater was revived. This happened thanks to the merchant A. Velikanov. He adapted his premises for the theater along Grecheskaya Street, which used to have a bakery. But the merchant A. Velikanov was not an entrepreneur for long. Soon, the economic crisis forced the philanthropist to cede the spectacle to his companion and neighbor, F. Rafailovich. It was he who coined the name Russian Theater.

The first performance on a new stage took place in 1875, in the fall. Touring celebrities often performed here at the end of the 19th century. Among them were: Ludwig Barnay, Sarah Bernhardt, Panas Saksagansky, Ernst Possartu and others. In September 1906, the new theater building burned down. But soon a new one was built in its place.
