The drug "Nitroxoline" is available in the form of round, orange-colored tablets, coated. The medication belongs to the pharmacotherapeutic group of antimicrobials. The active component of the drug is nitroxoline.

The antimicrobial and antiprotozoal properties of the drug allow it to be used in the treatment of infections of the genitourinary system. The drug "Nitroxoline" selectively inhibits the synthesis of bacterial DNA, forms complexes with metal-containing enzymes. Thus, the drug is active against bacteria, both gram-negative and gram-positive.

As a result of separate studies, the effectiveness of the medication was established in cases of lack of a therapeutic result from the use of other antimicrobial agents.

The drug is indicated for infections of the urinary tract and kidneys, provoked by bacteria that are sensitive to the active component of the medication. These include prostatitis, epididymitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, cystitis.

Medication "Nitroxolin" instruction recommends use as a prophylactic in the postoperative period after interventions in the genitourinary system, kidneys, as well as to prevent complications during medical and diagnostic procedures (for cystoscopy, catheterization, for example).

Dosage regimen

The drug "Nitroxoline" instruction recommends taking after or with food orally (inside). The recommended amount of medication per day for adults is 400 mg (four times 100 mg). If necessary (by agreement with the doctor), the dosage per day may be increased to 600-800 mg, not more. The duration of use is two to three weeks.

The medicine "Nitroxoline" is recommended for children from three to five years per day in a dosage of 200 mg. Patients older than five years - 200-400 mg. The daily dosage is divided into four doses.

In case of infections of the genitourinary system of the chronic course, the Nitroxolin drug can be prescribed by repeated two-week courses. At the same time, a break is required - two weeks (between courses).

For the prevention of postoperative complications, the drug is recommended in a dose of 100 mg 4 times a day. Duration of use is two to three weeks.

Taking Nitroxoline may cause allergies (skin rashes), dyspeptic reactions (vomiting, nausea). In some cases, renal function disorder, polyneuropathy, headache, ataxia (impaired coordination), paresthesia (numbness), tachycardia can be noted. Prolonged use of the drug provokes damage to the optic nerve, myelopathy, peripheral neuritis. The probable accumulation of the active substance can manifest itself in the form of general weakness, vomiting, nausea. As a rule, these phenomena are independently eliminated after stopping the medication.

Contraindications

The drug "Nitroxoline" is not recommended for hypersensitivity to its components and other means of the quinoline group, polyneuritis, neuritis, cataracts. Contraindications include hepatic, renal failure, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. The medication "Nitroxoline" during pregnancy and during lactation is also not prescribed.
