Theater History

Repertoire of the Drama Theater in Arkhangelsk

The first attempt to organize a drama theater (Arkhangelsk did not have such cultural institutions at that time) was made since 1790. Ivan Romanovich von Lieven filed a petition in the capital, where he wrote that the city needed this kind of performance, since they would be useful for young people. In 1793, the construction of the theater began. The building was erected stone. But he wasn’t finished - the city authorities didn’t have any money for this. Then, a command came from Petersburg to give the unfinished premises to a bread shop.

In the 1840s, the city's intelligentsia lost hope of waiting for the authorities to build the theater. A donation for the construction of the building for the performances was organized. In 1846, a wooden building appeared in the city with a hall for 650 seats. At first, only amateurs played here, and a year later professional artists came from Yaroslavl. In 1851 there was a fire, and the theater building was badly damaged. But the intelligentsia was so hungry for performances in the city that another room was bought with the money received from insurers. It was purchased from the merchant Yermolin and was also affected by the fire, but less than the theater building. City authorities and philanthropists helped in its restoration.

The intelligentsia had high hopes for the Drama Theater (Arkhangelsk). He was called upon to distract the people from cards, drunkenness, gossip, and other similar occupations. There was no permanent professional troupe; performances were performed by visiting artists and amateurs.

In 1931, a new building was built in which the Drama Theater. Lomonosov (Arkhangelsk) is to this day. A professional troupe was assembled. The theater building has undergone two renovations. The first lasted from 1964 to 1967. The second ended in 2009.
