Iris Berben was born in Detmold in 1950. Grew up in Hamburg, where her parents ran a restaurant. At the age of 17 she went to Israel. There she became a partner of singer Abi Orarima. Since then, has been closely associated with the pro-American lobby. In 1967, having returned to her native country, she began to actively fight against xenophobia and anti-Semitism.

From 1974 to June 2006, she was married to businessman Gabriel Lewy, from whom she gave birth to her son Oliver. Together with him she managed several restaurants and cafes in Berlin and Munich. In 2002, in the famous program, Michael Verhoeven read the diaries of Anne Frank and Joseph Goebbels. In 2005, she was awarded the title of "Sexiest TV Star in Germany aged 50 to 60 years" by readers of Best Life.
In 2010, Iris Berben, along with Bruno Ganz, was elected president of the German Film Academy. In 2014, together with Alexander Hack, she recorded a pop version of the French song C'est si bon, created in 1947 by Andre Hornes (poems) and Henri Betty (music). In 2017, she acted as a SPD delegate to the Federal Convention with the goal of electing the President of Germany.
