The aspiring artist believes that painting landscapes is not so difficult. But in reality, painting a tree is more difficult than a portrait. Fortunately, learning to draw both is not so difficult. One has only to study anatomy and create a lot of sketches from nature. But what to do if you want to convey a natural phenomenon? In this article, we will look at how to draw fog in various ways.
Watercolor mist
Before you paint this natural phenomenon with paints, you need to make a sketch. Sketch the landscape. Remember that pencil underpainting for watercolor should not be bold. It is only desirable to outline the main parts of the figure with contours. For example, mountain peaks, forest belt or riverbank. And, of course, remember: the more you use the eraser, the dirtier your end result will be.
How to draw fog in watercolor in stages? There are several technologies, but we will talk about two main ones:
- The first technique is called raw. How to draw a fog to get an atmospheric picture? This technique is indispensable. To begin with, with a thick brush dipped in water, we go through the entire canvas. Further, until the water has dried, we choose a shade that will be responsible for the fog. For this purpose, artists use gray and blue colors. We cover this entire surface of the sheet. After this, you need to wait until the water stops draining, but the paint has not yet dried. Now move on to drawing trees. We outline them with large spots. Nothing, if the paint flows into one another, this fuzzy effect will only play into our hands. If there is a pond in the picture, then you need to draw it after the first layer has completely dried. Water is ready, now you need to work out the thin branches of trees in the foreground. A difference must be created between what is visible from the fog and what this natural phenomenon hides.
- The second way will be a little easier. We already have a pencil sketch, so let's move on to drawing. Draw trees, river and land. Before the paint dries, you need to walk through the trees with a large brush dipped in water. Now everything is ready, it remains to draw only the foreground.
Fog Acrylic
We figured out the watercolor technique, now we move on to easier tasks. How to draw mist with acrylic? First of all, we need to prepare a sketch. But here pencil drawing will no longer matter. If itโs more convenient for you to draw when all the leaves on the trees are marked, go for it. Acrylic has a rather viscous and thick consistency, so pencil art will not be visible.
We start drawing. Mix blue and black colors on the palette. And now, with bristles, paint with a translucent layer on the entire sheet. To make the picture look more interesting, you need to make color transitions. For example, closer to the ground the fog will be white, and rising up, it will gain intensity. The fog is ready, we begin to work out the background. Brush strokes denote the alley. Remember that the fog is always cold, so we mainly use blue and green colors. Now draw the second and first plan. The closer the trees are to the viewer, the more they need richness and detail.
Oil mist
Such a picture is best done on canvas or fiberboard. They do not write oil on paper. How to draw fog in stages? Pencil sketch. And then we proceed to painting. You can repeat the technique that was given above, or use another method.
Unlike acrylic, oil can be spread on the canvas with a very thin layer. This is convenient, since it is possible to achieve almost invisible transitions between layers. In order not to lose a pencil sketch, we draw the main parts of the landscape. Especially intense paint should not be used. And the last touch you need to draw a fog. How to do it? The drawing should dry so that a new coat of paint does not smear the previous one. We pick up a white color on the brush and lay it in the right places with thin strokes. It turns out an interesting effect of a foggy veil.
Pencil mist
The easiest and fastest way to depict this natural element is to draw fog with a pencil. How to do it? We draw a sketch, then work out the background and foreground. We try not to smudge the work that we have already done.
The final touch will be covering the picture. For this purpose, it is better to use pastel, but if there is none on the farm, then a white pencil is quite suitable. We rub the lead into dust and use the eraser to drive it into the necessary parts of the picture. Usually fog is laid in the background. Do not be afraid if the drawing loses clear boundaries, this effect must be achieved.
We draw a fog with children
To create with your child is a lot of fun. And in order for this process to bring joy to parents too, you can help your child and come up with unusual drawing techniques.
For example, fog in the autumn landscape can be drawn not with a brush, but with a towel. If you feel sorry for the rag, you can replace it with paper. Dip the edge of the towel in white paint and lightly touch some parts of the pattern.
