History of the collection: a gift from S.I.Schukin

Sergey Ivanovich bought paintings from both the artists themselves and the dealers in painting. The latter called the active and entrepreneurial Schukin among themselves "Porcupine" - for intransigence in transactions.
Sergei Ivanovich often visited Paris, where he was able to purchase original paintings by Gauguin, Monet, Picasso, Renoir, Degas, Van Gogh, Pissarro, Cezanne. It is known that on his order they wrote panels of Matisse, Villard, Bonnard.
Sergei Ivanovich Schukin made a will, according to which the collection of works of French artists he had collected was to go to St. Petersburg. There were 225 works in it!
History of the collection: a gift of I. A. Morozov
Ivan Abramovich Morozov began to collect his delightful collection, carried away by domestic painting. However, a connoisseur was also attracted by airy French impressionism. Surprisingly, his artistic tastes almost coincided with the preferences of Sergei Ivanovich Schukin, although Ivan Abramovich was 17 years younger. It is important to say that, replenishing their collections, patrons were guided by no means material considerations.
I.A. Morozov most appreciated the work of Bonnard - in his collection more than three dozen works by this master. He was also interested in paintings by Denis, canvases by Matisse, the Tahitian subjects of Gauguin, the works of Van Gogh. At the time the Bolsheviks came to power, his collection had 135 paintings and sculptures by French masters.
Soviet history
During the years of Soviet power, the collections of Morozov and Schukin were distributed between the Hermitage and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. However, the work of the Impressionists for many years was gathering dust in storage, as they were objectionable to the artistic views of socialism. Interest in them began to wake up only in the middle of the last century.
Today, the collection of impressionist masters has taken its deserved place in the Hermitage - it extends almost completely on one of the floors of the museum.
