Each person quite often in his life is faced with a situation where he urgently needs pain medication. Headache or toothache, back aches, women's critical days - all these and many other cases are the reason for taking a medicine that can muffle the pain. One such remedy - and strong enough - is a drug called Ketonal Retard. In more detail about what it is and what kind of pain it is, who can take it, and who cannot, what analogues it has, and much more we will talk about later in our article.
Ketoprofen Essentials
The main active ingredient in Ketonal Retard is ketoprofen. And although it exists as an independent type of medicine (Ketoprofen suppositories and tablets are very popular), we are now interested in its capabilities as an active component of this medication.
Ketoprofen has several effects on the body. It can be used to lower fever, remove inflammation, or as an analgesic. It is well absorbed, does not accumulate and is excreted without problems in a fairly short period of time. There are drugs based on conventional ketoprofen, as well as with a prolonged (i.e., longer) action.
The recommended rule is to take Ketoprofen tablets after meals. At the same time, it has been scientifically proven that the effect of this substance practically does not change depending on whether to take the drug before, during or after a meal.
What is Ketonal Retard?
The medication, which is the subject of our interest in this material, is included in the list of ketoprofen-based analgesics. With what kind of pain can you take Ketonal Retard? Recall that due to the presence of ketoprofen, it has an antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory effect. And therefore, we can assume that it will help with headaches and tooth weakness, although probably not as high quality as we would like, however, according to the instructions for use of this drug, it is primarily antirheumatic.
That's what Ketonal Retard tablets help from in the first place - from all types of rheumatic diseases. In addition, the aforementioned medication perfectly relieves pain both after an injury and after surgery (for example, women who have had a cesarean section are often prescribed this remedy), and is also a real savior for painful menstruation.
Of course, if there is inflammation, then you can use candles and tablets "Ketoprofen."
The composition of the drug
As mentioned above several times, the main active component of Ketonal Retard is ketoprofen. However, it is not the only "ingredient" of this product. Excipients in Ketonal Retard (depending on its release form) may include: magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, lactose, povidone, talc, corn starch, cellulose, hypromellose, sodium hydroxide, ethanol, water, propylene glycol, gasoline alcohol. Some of the above components are found only in one form of the drug of interest to us, while others appear exclusively in one form.
What is the medication
Ketonal Retard is not only found in tablets, despite the common misconception in this. There are tablets of both conventional and prolonged action. Capsules with the same name and injection for both intramuscular and intravenous administration are also available.
As for the manufacturer of Ketonal Retard, they are making this drug at Lek Pharma, which is located in Slovenia.
Indications for use
When and to whom is Ketonal Retard appointed? Indications for use are: all kinds of diseases of the musculoskeletal system, to which nothing else applies - and arthritis of any kind (there are a lot of them - and psoriatic, for example, reactive, and so on), and gout, and rheumatism (including extra-articular ), and spondylitis (inflammation of the spine), and osteoarthritis.
The list goes on and on. In addition, we will not forget about pronounced pain sensations, as mentioned above. Ketonal Retard in tablets and in solution is excellent for relieving postoperative, post-traumatic and menstrual pain.
Contraindications to the use of the drug
At first glance, Ketonal Retard has more contraindications than indications, but this is a misleading impression.
So, back to the cases when the use of the drug of interest to us is prohibited for medical reasons. It:
- heart failure;
- allergic reactions to ketoprofen;
- previous urticaria, bronchial asthma, rhinitis or bronchospasm;
- coronary artery bypass surgery;
- ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding;
- impaired liver and / or kidney function;
- chronic dyspepsia ("indigestion", in other words, indigestion);
- children under the age of fifteen;
- predisposition to bleeding.
Is it possible during pregnancy and lactation
Pregnant and lactating - a special category. They are almost never allowed to take any of the drugs, since they are often not tested. In general, for this very reason, it is easiest for pregnant women to forbid everything. And at the same time nursing - because the drug can penetrate into breast milk.
Of course, there are some exceptions to medications that future mothers, ill, can take without fear. But, unfortunately, Ketonal Retard does not apply to them.
However, you need to make a reservation: it is strictly forbidden to pregnant women exclusively in the last trimester. In the first and second trimesters, its use is also undesirable, but it is categorically not forbidden. It is only indicated that it should be drunk only in case of urgent need, while the dose should be as small as possible, and the duration of administration should be as short as possible. As for nursing mothers, no studies have been conducted, and therefore it is not recommended to use the drug for lactation.
And if an overdose?
The instructions for use of almost any drug assures that the possibility of an overdose is negligible, almost completely reduced to zero. However, it should not be ruled out anyway, and therefore it is important to know what symptoms will tell you about exceeding the allowable dose of Ketonal Retard for your body.
So, the signs of an overdose of this drug: nausea, vomiting (possibly with blood), abdominal pain, cramps, melena (problems with stool, it becomes black and fluid, formed with an admixture of blood), depressed breathing, impaired consciousness. If such symptoms are found, you should immediately stop taking the medicine, rinse your stomach and drink activated charcoal.
Side effects
Ketonal Retard has a lot of side effects: flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dry mouth - and this is only from the gastrointestinal tract. But there are still side effects from the nervous system, for example, migraines, dizziness and nightmares.
From the sensory organs, for example, changes in taste and tinnitus. From the cardiovascular system - tachycardia or arrhythmia. Strictly speaking, paying special attention to all these side effects is not worth it. They are almost the same in most medicines, and their onset precisely with you is also absolutely not necessary and, in principle, unlikely.
How to take medicine
The mode of use of the drug "Ketonal Retard" - the dosage and duration of the course - depends on what specific form the medication will be used. So, if we are talking about capsules, then adults are prescribed one or two capsules two to three times a day. If you are talking about simple pills, then you need to drink them one at a time twice a day. As for the tablets of prolonged action, they are taken once a day.
If you need to give injections, then at home it can be done exclusively intramuscularly: once or twice a day, one hundred milligrams. Intravenous injections are carried out only by a qualified specialist in a hospital.
Once again, we draw the attention of readers to the fact that we are talking only about adults, since the use of this drug is prohibited until the age of fifteen. Drink that capsule that tablets should be immediately after a meal, drinking plenty of fluids.
The duration of such therapy is determined by the individually treating doctor. By the way, any kind of Ketonal Retard can be combined with the use of rectal suppositories with ketoprofen.

The most important thing in the storage of any medication is to arrange it so that it is in an inaccessible place for children. The storage conditions of Ketonal Retard in this are no different from the others. In this case, the ambient temperature should not exceed 25 degrees (but the medicine should not be “frozen" too). Both types of tablets, as well as capsules can be stored for five years, the injection should be taken faster: in three years.
Similar drugs
It is always necessary to know what alternative to the prescribed medication exists in the market, the situations are different. Ketonal Retard has enough analogues.
Ketoprofen
Of course, Ketoprofen is the full equivalent of Ketonal Retard. It can be found in tablets, rectal suppositories, a solution for intramuscular and / or intravenous injection, and finally a gel.
All that can be said about the methods of taking Ketoprofen, its indications and contraindications, fully applies to Ketonal Retard.
Arofen for children
A partial analog of Ketonal Retard is Arofen for Children. At least, this is a good option when you need to make life easier for a child who has not yet reached two more years (this is the remedy that is prescribed for such children). The composition of “Arofen” is not ketoprofen, but ibuprofen, which also relieves pain and eliminates heat, and therefore “Arofen” can be given to babies to remove pain, and as an antipyretic. The form of release for this medication is one - rectal suppositories. This is the most convenient and suitable form of medication for such babies.
You can not give children "Arofen" in the presence of bronchial asthma, a tendency to gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcer, heart failure, impaired renal function.
"Fastofen"
Another drug based on ketoprofen is Fastofen. This gel is for external use. This is the only difference, its action is no different from the influence of other dosage forms, it anesthetizes and is used as an anti-inflammatory agent. Thus, local treatment occurs when the drug is applied to the skin. This is an excellent remedy for pain in muscles, joints, post-traumatic pain, but it has one drawback: absorption is much slower than with tablets, capsules or injections.
You can not use "Fastofen" with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, allergies to ketoprofen, pathological changes in the skin, as well as in the third trimester of pregnancy.
"Ultrafastin"
Another gel with ketoprofen is Ultrafastin. It is appropriate to use it for dislocations and sprains, as well as for diseases of the musculoskeletal system, such as synovitis or bursitis.
"Ultrafastin" is not prescribed for eczema, dermatosis, open wounds, burns, as well as for pregnant women in the third trimester, children under the age of fifteen and sensitive to ketoprofen.
"Artrokol"
In two forms, there is based on Ketoprofen and "Artrokol" - either a gel for external use, or a solution for injection.
Indications and contraindications for its reception are completely identical to those of Ketonal Retard, so we will not dwell on this.
Ketum Gel
As the name implies, this is another ketoprofen-based gel. It is especially good for tendon inflammation, but, of course, can be used not only in this case.
In addition to the above funds, Ketonal Retard has many more analogues. Here are just a few of them: Fastum, Oruvel, Bystrumkaps, Valusal, Spazgel and others.
