Oftan Dexamethasone is an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic drug with a wide spectrum of action in ophthalmology. Diseases develop as a result of pathologies that occur in the visual organs.
Release form and composition
Oftan Dexamethasone is available in the form of eye drops (transparent) in dropper bottles (five milliliters).
Eye Drop Composition:
- dexamethasone;
- benzalkonium chloride;
- orthoboric acid;
- boric acid sodium salt;
- Trilon B;
- water.
Pharmacological properties
Oftan Dexamethasone exhibits a pronounced antiphlogistic and antiallergic effect. When fused with a specific hormone, they stimulate protein kinase activity in tissues, the drug corrects the manifestations of corticoid-dependent genes and affects protein synthesis. The duration of the anti-inflammatory effect after entering one drop is from four to eight hours.
The degree and rate of absorption of drug enzymes into the systemic circulation with local use is low. When instilled into the lower eyelid, the solution penetrates well into the epithelium of the cornea and mucous membrane of the eye, which leads to the acquisition of therapeutic concentrations in the watery part of the eye.
With a defect or inflammation of the conjunctiva, an increase in the penetration rate of active substances is observed.
Indications
According to the instructions for use, “Oftan Dexamethasone” is used in the treatment of the inflammatory process in acute or chronic course, as well as with allergic manifestations:
- An inflammatory disease in the tissue that connects the outer dense connective tissue and mucous membranes of the eye.
- Scleritis (an inflammatory process that affects the entire thickness of the outer connective tissue of the eyeball).
- A conjunctival inflammation that is caused by an allergic reaction or infection.
- Corneal infection, manifested mainly by its clouding, ulceration, pain and redness of the eye.
- Keratoconjunctivitis (an inflammatory disease of the conjunctiva involving the corneal pathological process).
- Non-purulent blepharitis (repeated inflammation of the ciliary edge of the upper and lower eyelids).
- Superficial mechanical damage to the anterior most convex transparent part of the eyeball of various etiologies.
- The pathological process in the thin movable diaphragm of the eye with a hole in the center and in the ciliary body of the eyeball.
- Inflammation of the iris.
- Uveitis (a disease in which inflammation of the choroid occurs).
- Edema.
- Short-term or prolonged inflammation of the choroid with the involvement of the inner lining of the eye, which is the peripheral section of the visual analyzer.
- Choroiditis (inflammation that affects the posterior vascular tract of the eye - the choroid).
- Sympathetic ophthalmia (a disease in which the choroid of the healthy eye is affected).
And also the drug can be used to prevent inflammation in the period after injuries and operations.
Contraindications
According to the instructions, Oftan Dexamethasone drops have a number of limitations in use:
- Increased fluid pressure inside the eye.
- Infection of the cornea, which is related to chickenpox, herpes simplex and other viral eye diseases).
- Glaucoma (an eye disease characterized by a continuous or repeated increase in intraocular pressure above the standard norm for a particular person with the further occurrence of characteristic defects).
- Mycobacterial infections of the eyes (a complex of nosological lesions caused by mycobacteria).
- Infectious disease, the cause of which becomes tubercle bacillus.
- Fungal and acute purulent conjunctivitis.
- Erosion of the cornea.
- Recurrent corneal erosion (a disease associated with damage to cells of the outermost layer of the anterior convex part of the eyeball - the epithelium).
- Age to 18 years.
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Can I use eye drops during pregnancy?

When using the drug for more than two weeks, it is necessary to monitor the intraocular pressure and the state of the cornea. Drops can mask ongoing fungal and bacterial inflammation. When determining the presence of infection, the medicine must be combined with antimicrobial therapy.
After applying the solution, because of the likelihood of increased tearing, it is recommended to refrain from driving.
Important! Oftan Dexamethasone Drops cannot be used in the treatment of patients under eighteen years of age.
