Photodynamic therapy in the treatment of acne

The method of photodynamic therapy (PDT), originally developed for the treatment of tumor and some infectious diseases, involves the use of special photoactive, photosensitive drugs (photosensitizers). These drugs are injected into the patient's body, and then activated using low-intensity pulsed laser radiation. Under the influence of light, the components of the drug are metabolized to active substances, which upon further irradiation destroy pathological cells, viruses and pathogens.

Indications for the use of PDT

Acne Treatment PDT can be recommended if you have the following indications:

  • profuse acne eruptions on the skin;
  • increased secretion of sebum;
  • blockage of the sebaceous glands and the inflammatory processes caused by it.

Positive effects

Usually, when using the PDT method the skin condition improves already some time after the session, but for the longest lasting result it is recommended to conduct treatment with courses of 4-6 procedures.

After completing the course, the following positive points are noted:

  • acne eruptions decrease or completely disappear;
  • inflammatory processes stop;
  • normal functioning of the sebaceous glands is restored;
  • skin color and quality improves.

Advantages and disadvantages of the PDT method

The following advantages of this method speak in favor of the use of photodynamic therapy:

  • the possibility of repeated repetition of procedures;
  • lack of local complications and long-term side effects;
  • short term of treatment;
  • the possibility of carrying out procedures at any age and in any state of health;
  • the possibility of outpatient treatment;
  • persistent and noticeable cosmetic result.

However, this procedure has its drawback. We are talking about a briefly persistent sensitivity to light, requiring the observance of certain precautions.

Recommendations for preparing for the procedure and behavior after it

Depending on the body, photosensitivity can last for 1-3 months, and all this period, to avoid burning, should be avoided by bright light and exposure to direct sunlight.

Before you go to the procedure, you must close all the curtains in the apartment and make sure that all the lamps are closed with lampshades. You need to bring sunglasses and a hat with wide brim with you, and for the treatment of acne on the body - a shirt with a long sleeve.

For 30 days after treatment, it is recommended to limit the time spent on the street, especially at noon. Even if it is cloudy outside, be sure to wear closed clothing and protect your face from exposure to light. Walking in the fresh air, especially in the first weeks after the procedure, it is better to postpone the evening after sunset.

In addition, when reading and working at a desk, it will be necessary to protect the skin from fluorescent lamps. Another mandatory precaution is a temporary refusal to dry hair with a hairdryer, especially a professional one, since high temperatures can lead to activation of the drug remaining in the cells and cause redness of the skin.

Contraindications

The procedure is contraindicated in patients with blood diseases, as well as in the presence of an allergy to the pigment porphyrin, which is involved in the metabolism.
