Theater History

Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theater

More than a hundred years ago, the Astrakhan State Opera and Ballet Theater was opened. Astrakhan is a city in which centuries-old traditions of art have developed. The initiator of the construction of the theater was businessman Konstantin Polyakovich. The project was created by architect A. S. Malakhovsky. The first theater building was built in a summer garden, called the "Arcadia". Carved details for decorating the future temple of art were made by the best masters of the Vyatka province. The Opera and Ballet Theater (Astrakhan) was opened in April 1899. Such celebrities as F. I. Chaliapin, V. F. Komissarzhevskaya, L. V. Sobinov, M. N. Yermolova, I. S. Kozlovsky, A. V. Nezhdanova and others performed on its stage. In 1976, the theater building was damaged by fire, and a new one was built in its place. Like the previous one, it never stopped, theaters of Leningrad, Gorky, Irkutsk, Moscow, Chelyabinsk and other cities of the country constantly gave performances. In the late 60s of the 20th century, a conservatory was opened in Astrakhan, where they began to train their own musicians and opera singers.

Since 2000, Mikhail Astanin became the director of the theater. Thanks to him, famous opera performers from the capital and other major Russian cities were invited to perform the main parts. And also a ballet troupe of a classical orientation was formed. The Astrakhan Theater fruitfully collaborates with the Bolshoi Theater. Various festivals are held. The repertoire includes complex productions of world significance.

The Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theater received a new, not wooden, but a stone building only in the 21st century. In 2006, a competition was announced for the best project of the temple of art. The architect A. M. Denisov defeated him. In 2010, preparations began for the opening of the theater. The first performance shown on the new stage was the opera The Queen of Spades by P. I. Tchaikovsky. This event happened in 2013.
