"Corvalol": instructions, the effect of the drug and indications for its use

"Corvalol" is a sedative with an antispasmodic effect. Widely used in the vast expanses of the former USSR, it remains unknown in most European countries, and it is strictly forbidden to import this medicine into some states (for example, the USA). This is due to the composition of the drug "Corvalol". The instruction contains a detailed description of it.

Corvalol is available in the form of drops. It is a colorless, strongly smelling clear liquid, poured into dark glass vials. The drug contains ethyl ester alpha-bromisovalerianic acid and sodium phenobarbital. These substances are considered drugs in many countries and are prohibited for sale and import. The first of them has an effect similar to valerian extract, only stronger: it soothes, relieves nervous tension, and with prolonged use in large quantities produces a hypnotic effect. The second is a rather serious sedative, which also has a noticeable vasodilating effect. The instructions attached to the drug "Corvalol" indicate that it also includes peppermint oil. This component dilates blood vessels and relieves spasms, gives the medicine a pleasant smell.

The use of Corvalol is indicated for increased irritability and neurosis, hypochondriac syndrome and panic attacks, coronary spasms, high blood pressure, tachycardia, cardialgia. Due to its antispasmodic properties β€œCorvalol” (the instruction confirms this) is able to eliminate spasms of the smooth muscles of the intestine. It effectively fights against sleep disturbances, contributing to a calm night's rest, restoring strength. Corvalol is the remedy taken for heart attacks before the arrival of the Ambulance. The non-standard use of this drug is also known: it helps to combat herpetic eruptions. Applying Corvalol externally for cold sores, patients achieve a wonderful effect: noticeable and long healing ulcers disappear within literally several days. To do this, moisten a cotton swab with Corvalol and lubricate the rashes several times a day until they heal.

Inside, the drug is taken, depending on the indications, 2-3 times a day. A single dose is from 15 to 50 drops - it is determined by the doctor. With vascular spasms and tachycardia, it is usually greater than with neurosis and insomnia. Individual intolerance to the drug "Corvalol" is possible - the instruction warns about this. In addition, if the dose is not selected correctly, the patient may complain of dizziness and unusual drowsiness. To cope with these phenomena is very easy - just reduce the dosage. With prolonged use, addiction often develops, and then the cancellation of Corvalol may be accompanied by a worsening of the patient's condition.

Children "Corvalol" (if necessary) is prescribed in an amount of from 3 to 15 drops per day. The dose and duration of administration is determined by the doctor: in this case, it depends not only on the clinical picture, but also on the age of the patient. In addition to the individual intolerance to the components of Corvalol, the drug is also contraindicated in renal and hepatic insufficiency. Due to the seriousness of the action of this drug, it should in no case be taken independently, without consulting a doctor.

The drug is not recommended for use by pregnant women. During lactation, Corvalol should also not be prescribed: contraindications to its use require termination of breastfeeding at this time.

Keep Corvalol, like most medicines, in a cool and well-ventilated place out of the reach of children. The shelf life of the drug should not exceed five years from the date of its release.
