The book takes place during the war. In the center of the plot is a little girl, Valya, who remained an orphan. Her entire family was killed during hostilities in the city. The girl managed to escape. During the shelling, she was able to escape from the city to a nearby village.
First part
That evening she met two women - one young, the other quite old, who led her to a small house and knocked on the door. A red-haired girl stepped out of the house. The red-haired woman saw that all three were refugees and let them into the house. The girl’s mother poured soup for them, but the orphan couldn’t move - either because she was stiff in the cold, or because of fear. A conversation ensues at the table. The kind mistress asks the young woman whether this is her daughter, this little poor thing. The old woman answered her that they simply lived on the same street in the city. Then the farm asked where all the relatives of the little girl were, and the old woman answered her that there was no one, all were killed.

Inviting the unfortunate to stay the night, Daria, the mistress of the house, could not fall asleep for a long time. She could not imagine what the baby had to go through. She got out of bed, went to the bed where the girl was sleeping and looked at her for a long time. Having finally managed to tear herself away from the sight of the poor girl, the mistress went up to her old father and asked: “Father, maybe we will leave her? She has nowhere to go at all ... ”The old man was at first opposed, referring to the fact that they themselves were rural people, and the girl was from the city. But in the end, yielding to his daughter, he gave his consent. The good-natured Daria was beside herself with happiness and kept saying: “I will have another daughter, Valentine’s daughter ...”
The second part of
The next morning, the girl could not remember how she fell asleep so quickly. The voices merged, and it was hard for her to navigate in an unusual environment for her. She opened her eyes and saw that an old man with thick gray eyebrows bent over her. As soon as he noticed that the girl woke up, he disappeared right there. The silence of the morning was broken by the sudden ringing of a bucket. It seemed to Valentine that it was a bullet that hit the window, and she abruptly jumped out of bed, with great effort able to restrain the cry: “Germans!”

Leaving the room, the girl saw the three children of the hostess, Daria, who examined her. One of the girls spoke: “Your aunts are gone. Mom said that you will live with us. " Silence reigned, after which the sister spoke again: “Have you seen the Nazis? Are they scary? Did they come straight to your house? ” Vali's heart sank, she was simply not able to answer. At this time, a new mother looked out from the kitchen and began to chastise her daughter for asking such questions to Vale.

Valya gradually began to get used to her grandfather, who at first frightened her so much, and then began to make friends in the new village.
Only once did one of the sisters start getting Valentinka with questions about her former, murdered, family. Valya couldn’t tell anything, because it worried her so much, she worried so much about her dead parents. But just this time, the sister flew great away from her mother for such questions, and this topic was forever closed.
A lot happened in the house. They insulted Valentine, and sometimes did not understand. Quarrels with the new-born sisters who did not want to understand the little orphan, the personal experiences of the girl - all this lasted for a long time. Product reviews
The book “A Girl from the City”, the summary of which is not able to truly convey all the impressions, was very fond of readers. Over the years, this work is read by both adults and children. Touching, life facts, the difficulty of finding happiness - all this lies at the heart of the book “Girl from the City”. Reviews over the years remain enthusiastic, because the historical moment described in the work actually reflects the horror of the war with Germany, how not only the military and their wives suffered, but also ordinary working people who had a lot of ordinary troubles . The story of a little girl who saw the death of her parents and younger brother can affect even the hardest heart. L. Voronkova and many of her works have always made a splash, because all her books are imbued with sincerity, and most importantly, with truth. Voronkova did not invest a drop of fiction. “A Girl from the City” is a true work, thoroughly saturated with fear and sadness. The main character, who could not even utter a word about how her parents died, it was she who became the symbol of all those children who lost their parents during the war. How touching the writer describes Vali’s friendship with animals - with a bull, a cow and lambs! Loneliness and fear in the eyes of an innocent child - this perfectly characterizes those years when the war found everyone.
