Almost every person has encountered such a thing as constipation. Dense feces in the intestines deliver a lot of unpleasant moments: pain, heaviness in the abdomen, nausea. At the first manifestations of constipation, most people try to eliminate this problem as soon as possible and take a shock dose of a strong laxative, without even thinking about the consequences and negative processes that occur in the body at this moment.
Most modern medications designed to normalize the functional activity of the intestine are based only on moisture retention. Therefore, prolonged and uncontrolled use of laxatives can lead to dehydration and will only aggravate the situation. In addition to this, a person lacks nutrients and trace elements. That is why patients with chronic constipation should undergo an examination, rather than self-medicating and not exacerbate the problem.
Old proven remedy
Today, doctors do not prescribe "Purgen" (tablets) for the treatment of constipation, saying that the drug has a negative effect on the liver and kidneys. From ancient times, it was considered an effective laxative drug that helped to cope with chronic constipation. In Russia, it was previously produced in tablets of 50, 100 mg (today it is banned for sale). The main active ingredient is phenolphthalein (a substance used in chemistry), weโll talk about its properties today.
pharmachologic effect
The laxative Purgen (tablets) acted on the muscle tissue and nerve endings of the intestinal walls, thereby enhancing its peristalsis. The drug was dissolved in the intestinal tract and caused a deviation in the absorption of fluid, this determined the effect of the drug, which could last for a day.
Who was shown "Purgen"?
Tablets were previously prescribed for therapeutic purposes in the chronic and acute stages of the disease (constipation). The daily dosage should not exceed 300 mg. To avoid addiction, doctors did not recommend prolonged use. During the administration of the Purgen preparation (tablets), a discoloration of urine was observed in patients due to an alkaline reaction. This phenomenon was considered the norm - after the course completed, the situation was restored.
Side effects and contraindications
The drug was prescribed with caution to the elderly. If a negative reaction occurs, they were advised to take activated charcoal and stop using the Purgen medicine (tablets). The price of a laxative did not exceed one hundred rubles. Before conducting the therapy on their own, doctors strongly recommended talking with a specialist.
In rare cases, the medication could provoke arrhythmia, dermatitis, skin rashes, enteritis, collapse, albuminuria and hypokalemia. It was banned for people with renal failure and individual intolerance. The following drugs were analogues of this medication: Laxoin, Laxatol, Purgil, Phenaloin.
Doctors today do not prescribe Purgen (its price was low), since it has not been available for a long time, because it causes serious complications: epilepsy, nervous diseases, and even malignant tumors of the liver and kidneys. For this reason, in 2002, many countries of the world removed it from sale. If there is a choice, then give preference to plant extracts based on walnuts or senna.
