"Bactroban" refers to bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents. This is a topical antibiotic. The drug copes well with all kinds of skin infections. A dermatological cream is produced for use in infections of the skin, wound infections and all kinds of bacterial and fungal infections of the skin, as well as separately there is Bactroban nasal ointment. Analogs can be considered as similar in spectrum action, and similar in composition (in the main active substance).
Description of the drug
"Bactroban" is an ointment of white color, it is easy to apply and spread on the skin. There are significant differences between dermatological and nasal ointments.
Dermatological "Bactroban" is available in aluminum tubes of 15 g each. The active substance is mupirocin, excipients are polyethylene glycol 400, polyethylene glycol 3350.
Bactroban nasal is available in aluminum tubes with an applicator of 3 g.
The active substance is mupirocin, excipients are soft white paraffin, glycerin, softisan 649.
The drugs are not interchangeable, you can not use dermatological ointment internally, because polyethylene glycol is rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa and negatively affects the kidneys when the substance is removed from the bloodstream.
Both forms of release of Bactroban ointment have analogues. These are Bonderm and Supirocin. Compared with the drug "Bactroban" analogues have a slightly lower cost, the content of the active substance is comparable.
pharmachologic effect
The active substance of the drug, mupirocin, inhibits microorganisms that cause infection of the skin and soft tissues. This action is not selective, however, mupirocin does not have a noticeable effect on some bacterial groups - Enterobacteriaceae, Micrococcus species, and Corynebacterium species strains are not sensitive to Bactroban. Analogs in this case need to be selected not according to the active substance, but according to similar pharmacokinetics.
When used, the ointment slightly penetrates into the thickness of the skin or soft tissues (when used in the treatment of secondary wound infection), mupirocin is excreted from the body with urine. If the treated skin surface or wound is under a dressing, the penetration of mupirocin into soft tissues is enhanced.
The effectiveness of Bactroban and comparison with analogues
When applied topically, the drug showed a qualitative effect on heterogeneous lesions of the skin. Bactroban is easily tolerated, it can be combined with other drugs or used in an exceptional manner.
The average cost of a dermatological ointment is 375 rubles (15 g), nasal - 570 rubles (3 g). If it is not possible to buy Bactroban (ointment), analogues can solve the problem. However, before buying it is recommended to compare the amount of active substance and clarify which excipient is used in the analogue.
Indications for use
Bactroban is successfully used for the following diseases:
- furunculosis;
- impetigo;
- ecthyma;
- folliculosis;
- secondary infections of the skin and soft tissues (wound infection, eczema).
For the treatment of staph infections in the sinuses, rhinitis and other infections of the nasal mucosa, Bactroban nasal is used. Analogs should also be selected so that they are designed for intranasal use. Chronic rhinitis caused by bacterial strains respond well to treatment with Bactroban.
Mode of application
Dermatological ointment is applied to a cleaned, dried wound or to the skin affected by an infection using a cotton or gauze swab. The drug must be distributed in a thin layer over the entire affected surface with the capture of a small area of healthy skin around. Any infected surface is treated in the direction from the edges to the middle to prevent the spread of infection to healthy tissues. After applying the ointment, the treated skin surface can be covered with a gauze bandage and fixed with an adhesive plaster.
A small amount of nasal ointment is placed in each nostril using an applicator. After this, the nasal passages need to be compressed with your fingers so that the ointment is evenly distributed over the mucous membrane. It is important to remember that dermatological ointment is not used on the nasal mucosa, for this exclusively “Bactroban” (nasal ointment) is used. Analogs should also be carefully selected according to the application area.
Contraindications
If you are sensitive to mupirocin, the active substance, as well as to any of the excipients, you should choose analogues instead of Bactroban. The instruction in this case involves the search for a medicine that has a fundamentally different composition, but similar in pharmacological properties.
"Bactroban" can not be used for ophthalmic infections. In case of accidental contact with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with plenty of warm water and consult a doctor. If you accidentally swallow it, you should also contact a doctor.
In renal failure, caution is recommended, since the drug that enters the bloodstream is excreted by the kidneys and can negatively affect their condition.
Despite the fact that Bactroban can be used in combination treatment, it is not recommended to mix the ointment with other dermatological creams. If it is necessary to apply different drugs, then the application from Bactroban is applied for half an hour, then carefully removed before applying another medicine. The next drug is applied to the affected surface of the skin no earlier than half an hour after removing the ointment.
Dermatological ointment "Bactroban" can not be used internally, but the reverse application is possible. Nasal ointment can be spotted on minor inflamed skin lesions.
Analogues of the drug
For a number of reasons, it may be necessary to select analogues for Bactroban ointment. Somewhat cheaper are the drugs "Bonderm" and "Supirocin." By the amount of active substance, these drugs are quite comparable, differ in excipients.
With intolerance to mupirocin, analogues with another active substance are selected. The doctor may prescribe a tetracycline ointment, Synthomycin, Fusiderm, Levomekol, and other drugs.
Recommendations and patient reviews
Progress in treatment is observed literally within a few days. If there is no improvement, then the doctor may recommend a combination treatment when the drugs are alternated or supplemented with other dosage forms (tablets, drops).
After applying the ointment, you need to wash your hands with soap, this will prevent accidental ingestion of part of the drug on the mucous membrane of the eyes or mouth. For infants, the drug is not prescribed. If skin lesions occur in an infant, do not self-medicate, the pediatrician will prescribe a drug suitable for a small patient by age.
In general, patients respond positively to the drug "Bactroban" (ointment). The analogue instruction does not prohibit, in addition, when combining different drugs, the active substance of the drug mupirocin does not conflict with them.
“Bactroban” has a beneficial effect on the skin condition during secondary infection, it is sometimes prescribed for acne to stop the inflammatory process caused by microorganisms.
