His wife and son, among many, were evacuated to Atlanta, where he goes by police car. As a result, the main character arrives in Atlanta on a horse, which he found after gasoline ran out in the car. Along the way, he meets empty cities in which there is no one. At the entrance to Atlanta, a horde of zombies attacks him, killing a horse, but Rick escapes by locking himself in a tank that he found nearby.
Glenn, a young guy, apparently Asian, helps him and brings him to the store, which hides a group of escaped death. These are Jackie, T-Dog, Merle and Andrea. From them, Rick learned that they were in Atlanta from a camp to replenish food supplies. But they were noticed by the dead, who, having knocked out a window, penetrated inside. But there was no understanding in the new group, as the racist and drug addict Merle pounced on T-Dog. Rick was able to handle Dixon and handcuffed him to the pipe.
Rick and Glenn came up with a way to get past the zombies without attracting their attention. They smeared blood and guts of a gutted zombie and successfully got out. Finding a car, they take out the rest of the members of their group. But Dixon remained on the roof.
Family reunification
Having met his son and wife, Rick decides to go back and save Dixon, and also find his bag with weapons, which he lost in the city. Three go with him.
