Brain Stimulants - True or Fiction?

In the near future, brain stimulants will begin to go on sale. They improve concentration, memory. Vitamins for brain activity have one important advantage - there are no side effects with their use.

Scientists at the Academy of Medical Sciences are developing safe drugs that have a positive effect on brain function. Pills for brain activity can be introduced into the treatment of diseases and their consequences, such as schizophrenia, strokes, dementia, distracted attention syndrome , Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and so on.

These medicines are called cognition enhancers, as they stimulate cognitive abilities. The method of their action is very simple and consists in regulating the ratio of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system, which are responsible for thought processes and operations, their speed.

Stimulants of brain activity are quite in demand in the modern world, since approximately 20% of the world's population works at night. And this mode of operation negatively affects brain activity, which was confirmed by American scientists. There is an opinion that only one night without sleep can disrupt the normal functioning of the brain, concentration and attention are lost.

Many drugs cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier, and, accordingly, are not able to change the processes occurring in the brain. However, these drugs can easily pass through this obstacle.

After they are put on the market, brain stimulants will be in high demand, since now they are “unauthorized” by different categories of citizens, for example, “Methylphenidate” or “Modafilin” are used. These drugs really stimulate the cognitive abilities of healthy people.

In one of the surveys of the journal Nature (a leading scientific journal), editors asked their readers, who are mainly employees of scientific organizations. The survey found that out of 1,400 respondents, every 5th used brain stimulants without medical indications: Methylphenidate (62%), Modafilin (44%) or beta-blockers (they can suppress anxiety, thereby stimulating brain activity).

Glutamate is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Drugs - ampakines enhance the duration of endogenous glutamate, thereby facilitating memorization. On the basis of ampakines, drugs are being developed that are intended for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. Some of them are already undergoing clinical trials.

Characteristic of these substances is that they do not increase blood pressure, pulse rate, do not cause “ecstasy”, and, therefore, do not cause drug dependence, unlike amphetamines or caffeine.

It is paradoxical that D-cycloserine, which also enhances the action of endogenous glutamate, does not stimulate memorization, but erases memories. This is due to the fact that the processes of memorization and forgetting are very similar in their physiological nature.

"D-cycloserine" interacts with glutamate receptors, which leads to a partial stimulation of forgetting, the transmission of information by already established neural associations is suppressed. This allows you to overcome phobias, anxieties, drug addiction.
Thus, stimulants of brain activity in the near future will become the sphere of large business. Despite the development of these drugs for the treatment of diseases, healthy people will also use them.
