The Koltsov Drama Theater (Voronezh) was born in the 18th century. Today, in his repertoire, classical and modern plays, children's productions.

History of the Drama Theater (Voronezh)

Drama Theater Voronezh

The Koltsov Drama Theater was born in 1787. Performances and rehearsals were held in the house of the governor V.A. Chertkov. The artists were people from high society. And in 1799, serf actors released into the wild began to go on stage with them. The first professional troupe appeared in 1801. But she was entrepreneurial, not stationary. It was led by Moscow comedy actor Petrov.

The main task of the theater at that time was to ennoble feelings and correct morals.

In the 20s of the 19th century, the famous actors of the country performed on the stage of the Voronezh drama.

In 1917, the theater became known as the "Big Soviet". He existed with that name for exactly 20 years. Since 1937, it began to be called the Voronezh Drama Theater.

During the war years, the theater ceased to function normally. Actors worked in hospitals, and also traveled with the front line brigades with performances. In June 1942, a bomb hit the theater building, which destroyed the auditorium and the stage. In July, the troupe was evacuated to the Chelyabinsk region. The artists returned to their city in December 1944. Then the premiere of the play “Woe from Wit” took place. After the liberation of Voronezh from the Nazis, the theater building was one of the first to be restored, despite the fact that the city was destroyed by 95%.

In the war and post-war years, the repertoire included performances of the corresponding subjects: “Soldiers of Stalingrad”, “General Brusilov”, “Front”, “Invasion”.

A permanent troupe appeared here in the early 30s. During the war years, artists worked in hospitals and front-line brigades.

The Drama Theater (Voronezh) received the name of the poet Alexei Koltsov in 1959, in the year of its 150th anniversary.

Today the troupe participates in festivals, actively tours.

Building reconstruction

The new drama theater (Voronezh), or rather updated, opened its doors in 2012. The reconstruction lasted for many years. Its main task was to make the building as close as possible to the historical original. But at the same time the interior is made more strictly than before. Now there are no stucco moldings and other decorations in it. Even crystal lights have simple shapes. The interior is made in modern style.

Artists created an interior story called “winter theater”. The colors used are white and silver. The shape of crystal lights resembles snowdrifts. The glass on the doors looks like frostbitten. Simply put, the interior resembles a decoration from a winter fairy tale. This is an unusual and original, even one of a kind, design decision. Getting into the theater, the viewer seems to be in another world, which is more perfect. It inspires and purifies. This is how the temple of art was treated in the era of romanticism and in the last years of the existence of the Soviet Union. So the new building of the Voronezh Drama Theater is fully consistent with this postulate. The building has just such an effect. Getting here, the viewer disconnects from reality, forgets his problems, plunges into another space and time. There is only him and a wonderful art.

The author of the building design project was artist Yuri Cooper. He is a unique person. He is a genius. And he could not create a non-unique theater.
