The one who told this rather amazing story (let's call him a storyteller) loved to come to the village of Small Vezha. There, an old hunter, whose name was Mazay, was always waiting for him. At Mazay, the narrator was visiting and went hunting with him. And once, on a hunt, they fell under heavy rain, and had to seek refuge.
"Grandfather Mazai and the Hares": a summary
They took refuge in a barn, where they immediately started talking merrily. Grandfather Mazay was a great expert on various stories and interesting stories. At first he poisoned about village hunters, among whom one broke the trigger of a gun and went hunting with a box of matches, the other's hands were constantly freezing and he was warming himself with a pot of coal that he carried with him. And one was a unique case with Mazay himself, and therefore the narrator decided to record it with his own hand.

So, one day in the spring, during one of such severe floods, Grandfather Mazai got out into the forest for firewood.
So begins a story called "Grandfather Mazai and the Hares." The summary is further. When floating on a boat, my grandfather discovered a small island in the water, on which, in order to escape from the flood, hares crowded. The old Ohonik took them to his boat. And then he noticed a hare on a stump and also saved her from certain death. Sailing a little further, he saw a log on which a few more rabbits sat. Then he hooked the log with a hook and dragged him along. Grandfather took all the animals to a safe place and released them - they scattered all over the place. Two pairs of hares greatly weakened and could not run. Mazay put them in a bag and brought them home, warmed them up and released them in the morning.
And so the work "Grandfather Mazay and the Hares" ended. A summary can be concluded by the fact that after this incident the whole village laughed at Grandfather Mazay. And since then he has not shot hares either in spring or summer, only exclusively in winter. In the summer, he hunted ducks, picked berries and mushrooms, and gaddled with hunters and often went on foot to Kostroma.
