Youth
Sergey Maksimov was born into the family of a county postmaster in the
Kostroma province. There he received his initial education, attending the Posad public school. Brothers - Vasily (surgeon) and Nikolai (writer). From 1842 to 1850 he attended the Kostroma men's gymnasium. In 1850 he entered Moscow University at the medical faculty. In 1852 he moved to the city of St. Petersburg. He began to study at the Medical and Surgical Academy. The author's first literary experiments include essays on the topic of folk life.
Wanderings
Sergei Maximov is a writer whom Turgenev once drew attention to. Encouraged by this, the novice author in 1855 undertook a literary and ethnographic excursion. It was a walking tour of the

Activities
Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich organized a number of different ethnographic expeditions to different parts of Russia. Sergey Maximov was chosen to travel to the North.
