Myositis of the back muscles is an inflammatory pathology of a rheumatic nature. In some cases, it affects not only soft tissues, but also the skin. The exact causes of the disease have not yet been elucidated. But scientists are inclined to believe that the main triggering factor is the autoimmune process. Myositis occurs more often due to inflammatory or traumatic effects on nerve endings, skeletal muscles.
Predisposing factors
Before considering the symptoms and treatment of myositis of the back muscles, you need to find out what factors can provoke its development. Among them are the following:
- violation of metabolic processes in the body;
- trauma (symptoms may not appear immediately, but after 2-3 days);
- involuntary muscle spasm;
- bacterial or viral infection;
- soft tissue parasitic lesion;
- toxic effects;
- physical overload of individual muscle groups;
- hypothermia;
- nervous tension, stress;
- prolonged use of certain groups of drugs;
- alcohol abuse.
Myositis of the back muscles in children often occurs due to hypothermia or being in a draft. The risk group also includes drivers, office workers, weather dependent people.
Types of disease
Myositis of the back muscles is different, so it can be classified as follows:
- Acute infection of tissues of an infectious type without the release of pus. It has a viral nature. The patient manifests severe muscle pain, general weakness.
- Acute purulent myositis. The affected area not only hurts, but also swells. The person rises in temperature, he is chilling. Pus appears in the muscles, tissue necrosis develops. In this case, surgical intervention is often required to get rid of the purulent focus. If this is not done, then the soft tissue will simply melt.
- The parasitic type. The cause of development is considered intoxication due to the accumulation of parasitic waste products in the body. Muscles become tense, a person feels wave-like attacks of pain. Swelling develops.
- Dermatomyositis. In addition to soft tissues, the patient is affected by the skin.
- Ossifying myositis of the back muscles. There is damage to the connective tissue. This type of pathology is considered congenital and is extremely rare. The course of the disease cannot be predicted.
- Polymyositis. In this case, a large number of muscles are affected. More often this type of myositis is autoimmune in nature. It is the most difficult to treat.
According to ICD-10, myositis of the back muscles has the code M60.
Symptomatology
The presented pathology may not manifest itself in the early stages of development. Further, the patient has the following symptoms:
- pain in the back, having a different nature, and intensifying during bends, bends, sneezing, coughing;
- fever (if the pathology is in an acute stage);
- discomfort and pain on palpation;
- change in skin tone and swelling of the affected area;
- burning sensation;
- difficulty walking;
- muscle weakness.
In most cases, the patient is forced to take a certain unnatural posture, in which the intensity of the pain syndrome decreases. Symptoms develop slowly or quickly and brightly.
Diagnosis of the disease
Myositis of the back muscles requires complex treatment, but only a doctor can prescribe it after a thorough diagnosis of the patient, including such studies:
- Fixation of patient complaints, neurological tests and palpation of the affected area.
- Magnetic resonance imaging, which is the most informative.
- Electromyography.
- Blood tests (additionally for antibodies).
- A muscle biopsy.
Only after a comprehensive diagnosis can you start basic therapy.
Traditional treatment for the disease
Before treating myositis of the back muscles with drugs, you need to consult a doctor. Self-selection of funds is fraught with the occurrence of complications. The standard treatment regimen involves the use of such drugs:
Group of funds | Characteristic |
NSAIDs | This group includes "Ibuprofen", "Diclofenac", "Movalis". The presented drugs are actively fighting the inflammatory process, relieve the patient of symptoms. The maximum allowable duration of use of NSAIDs is 7 days. |
Venotonic | Thanks to them, swelling can be eliminated. |
Antibiotics | Used only when attaching a bacterial infection. Otherwise, they will be ineffective. |
Topical preparations | Here, several groups of drugs are used: warming ointments ("Finalgon", "Capsicam") and anti-inflammatory ("Nise", "Ketonal"). When used in combination with tablets, the effectiveness of therapy increases. |
Anthelmintic | Such drugs are necessary only if myositis is provoked by parasites. |
Antipyretic | These drugs are used in the acute stage of the development of the disease, when the patient's temperature can jump dramatically. |
Muscle relaxants | "Midokalm" with myositis of the back muscles eliminates spasm and pain. Such a drug is used only as directed by a doctor, when other drugs did not give effect. |
Ointments for myositis of the back muscles do not have a systemic effect and allow you to get rid of pain in a short period of time. If there is a purulent process in the soft tissues, the doctor has the right to prescribe surgery to remove the lesion.
Alternative methods of therapy
If the symptoms and treatment of myositis of the back muscles by traditional methods is understandable, then you can consider whether to use folk remedies. They will not be able to completely get rid of the disease on their own, but in combination with medicines they will help to achieve the desired result faster. Such recipes will be useful:
- Boiled potato compress. The vegetable needs to be crushed and still warm applied to the sore spot. Additionally, the compress is covered with a warm scarf. Keep it until it cools. After removing it, the muscles need to be rubbed.
- Leaves of white cabbage should be mashed, greased with soap and sprinkled with soda. Then they are applied to the affected area, covered with a film and a warm cloth.
- The diseased area can simply be smeared with honey and insulated.
- Bodyagi. It is used to rub the affected muscles. This is done once a week. To prepare the solution, you need to mix 10 g of giardia with 2 tbsp. l any vegetable oil.
- Leaves of lilac. Used as a compress. They need to be filled fresh with boiling water for 5 minutes. Apply warm to the site of inflammation, covering with a film and a blanket. After half an hour, the compress can be removed, but the patient will have to lie still in bed and rest.
- Badger fat. It is used for massage at home. The tool helps to warm and relax the muscles.
All folk recipes must be agreed with the doctor, so as not to harm yourself even more.
Other therapies
At the end of the acute period, the result of drug treatment can be fixed using such methods:
- Physiotherapeutic procedures. Here, electrophoresis with Dimexideum, mud therapy, thermal procedures and hydrotherapy are more often prescribed.
- Physiotherapy. It allows you to develop affected muscles, relieve spasm, improve back mobility, and eliminate pain. A set of exercises is selected by a doctor. Before performing it, the patient needs to warm up the muscles for half an hour. Gradually, the load can be increased.
- Protein diet. It is this element that takes an active part in the construction of muscle tissue.
- Manual therapy. It must be carried out by an experienced specialist.
- Massage with myositis of the back muscles. It is done after the acute period of the disease has ended.
Comprehensive treatment of the disease allows you to quickly deal with it and prevent the development of consequences.
Possible complications
If treatment is not started on time, then the disease can cause serious complications:
- tissue functionality is lost, muscles atrophy;
- the biomechanics of the joints are disturbed, and a person can remain disabled for life;
- necrotic processes in the muscles develop;
- there is respiratory failure, asthma, problems with swallowing.
To prevent the development of such complications, it is necessary to consult a doctor when the first symptoms and discomfort in the back appear.
Disease prevention
The appearance of a disease such as myositis can be avoided. For this, it is enough for a person to follow certain preventive measures:
- dress according to season, avoiding hypothermia of muscles, not to be in a draft;
- perform simple physical exercises to strengthen soft tissues;
- give up alcohol, smoking and other bad habits;
- if a person is forced to spend a lot of time at the computer, then he needs to do a warm-up every hour;
- eat properly and balanced (protein foods should be present in the diet);
- timely treat various infectious or inflammatory diseases.
Myositis is a difficult and very painful condition that can be quickly dealt with if timely therapy is started. To do this, you do not need to delay a visit to the doctor if there is discomfort in the back.
