Quentin Tarantino became famous for his work in the movie, in which most of the characters are "bad guys." One of his most striking films, confirming what was said, is "The Disgusting Eight." Tarantino himself described the plot of this picture in a nutshell as follows: a bunch of bastards locked in one hut, behind the windows of which there is a blizzard, and each one has a revolver in his hands. However, each of the characters has its own story, and sometimes two: true and invented. That is why, throughout the whole picture, the viewer, not looking up from the screen, watches how the heroes, or rather, “antiheroes”, remember past grievances and literally cut each other's throats.
Quentin Tarantino
The film “The Abominable Eight” was released in 2015. By this time, the director already had 37 awards and 47 times became the nominee for the most prestigious film awards. In addition, he had over 40 films behind him, the vast majority of which not only received high marks from specialists, but also had huge box office success.
Suffice it to recall that the 6 films that Quentin Tarantino made (“The Disgusting Eight” is his last work) were included in the list of “100 Best Films” according to the magazine “FHM”. Among them, “Pulp Fiction”, which took 1st place in this rating, “Reservoir Dogs”, both parts of the picture “Kill Bill”, as well as the paintings “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “True Love”.
From a young age, the director was an ardent fan of Westerns. Perhaps this is due to the fact that the blood of the Cherokee Indian tribe flows through his mother’s veins. Impressed by Italian paintings about cowboys and sheriffs, Tarantino created the film “Django Unchained”. He talks about a slave who, being free, begins to search for his slave wife. According to Tarantino himself, he wanted to show those pages of American history that were very rarely displayed on the screen, and he did it in the spaghetti western genre.
The film, in which the director revealed the monstrous essence of slavery, was shot in 2012. For his script, Tarantino won the next Golden Globe and his second Oscar.
The film "The Abominable Eight": how it was created
The announcement of the new Tarantino work took place in the fall of 2013. Initially, it was supposed to be a continuation of the Western "Django Unchained". However, a few months later the director announced that he was abandoning the project. The reason for this decision was the publication of the script of the “Abominable Eight” on the Internet. However, the desire to make a film where there is not a single good character prevailed, and Tarantino resumed work on the picture. At the same time, he said that he had changed the ending in order to maintain intrigue.
The limited release of the picture in the North American box office took place on December 25, 2015 at 100 venues, and the film was released at the box office on January 1, 2016.
Revenues from the painting amounted to 155,760,117 dollars, while 44 million was spent on its creation.
Plot: tie
The action of Quentin Tarantino's film “The Abominable Eight” takes place after the civil war in Wyoming. A wagon is driving along one of its roads, which carries John Ruth and the daisy killer he escaped from prison. A large reward has been promised for the woman’s head, and the “bounty hunter” is confident that he will receive this amount. On the way, Ruth picks up two fellow travelers, including Chris Manniks, who introduced himself as a sheriff, and when a blizzard begins, the travelers decide to wait her out in the inn. When their crew drives up to the place they wish to spend the night, it turns out that the owners left, leaving a Mexican servant to look after the house, and he let in a cattle slayer, a former general from the Confederate army, a cowboy and hangman.
Denouement
The most interesting thing in the picture begins when the snowfall cuts off the heroes from the outside world, and they find themselves in the position of spiders enclosed in a closed jar. The conflict immediately begins between Smithers and Warren, since the general and the black major were very recently enemies on the battlefield. As a result, both clutch at the revolvers, and the Confederate falls dead. Daisy, meanwhile, sees someone pouring poison into a coffee pot. To her delight, Ruth and his coachman began to spit blood. The Bounty Hunter accuses the woman of poisoning and begins to beat her. Daisy grabs a gun and shoots at Rue, who dies. The black major, who is known for having correspondence with Lincoln, disarms the criminal, forces everyone to stand against the wall with raised hands and begins to figure out who the poisoner can be. It turns out that this is a cowboy Gage. In the shootout that began, Warren turns out to be a wounded bullet flying from under the floor, and Mobray dies, having previously injured Mannix. Having reached this place in the plot of the film “The Abominable Eight”, the director and screenwriter Tarantino shows the viewer the events that took place in the inn on the morning of the previous day. It turns out that at that time Mobrey, Bob, Gage and Daisy's brother Jody Domergyu arrived there. Their goal was to ambush and free the captive Ruth. To do this, they killed the owners and those who were in the tavern. The only one the bandits spared was General Smithers. At the same time, Jody Domergyu hid in the basement and from there he watched how events unfolded.
Then the action returns to the time of the shootout, and the sheriff makes Brother Daisy crawl out of the basement. A black major shoots all criminals, and then hangs the criminal with the sheriff. In the finale, both of them, bleeding, are waiting for death.
The Abominable Eight: actors and roles
To participate in his picture, Tarantino invited actors who do not need to be introduced. Among them:
- Oscar-winning Samuel L. Jackson - Major Marcus Warren.
- Jennifer Jason Lee, Oscar winner - Daisy Domergyu.
- Tim Roth, Oscar and Golden Globe Nominee - Osvaldo Mobray.
- Kurt Russell, Saturn Laureate - John Ruth The Hanger.
- Walton Goggins, Emmy Nominee - Sheriff Chris Mannix.
- Michael Madsen, who starred in many of Tarantino's films, is Joe Gage, a cowboy.
- Demian Bishir, Oscar nominee - Mexican.
- Bruce Dern, winner of the Berlin and Cannes festivals, nominee for an Oscar - General Sanford Smithers.
- Channing Tatum, multiple winner of the Fox Youth Film Award - Jody Domeger and others.
In addition, the voice of Tarantino himself, acting as a narrator, sounds behind the scenes. However, he decided not to indicate his name in the credits.
"Piracy"
As already mentioned, even before the work on the painting began, the script was published on the Internet without the permission of its author. Thus, the intrigue was destroyed, and Tarantino had to come up with a new denouement. However, the pirates did not stop there. A few days before the movie “The Abominable Eight” was to be released, its promotional copy, intended for Andrew Kosov (one of the leaders of Alcon Entertainment), was freely available on the Web. Only in the first day it was downloaded more than half a million times. It turned out that the "abduction" was organized by the famous "gang" Hive-CM8. They admitted this themselves immediately after the premiere of the film, and also apologized to the director. “Pirates” said they regretted spoiling the premiere of his new work, but they were motivated by a desire to share the film with those film enthusiasts who cannot afford to go to the cinema.
Interesting Facts
Tarantino is a famous original and provocateur. He loves to invent details and combine his paintings with the help of the finest plot threads, which can only be noticed and understood by a very attentive audience who is well acquainted with his work.
In particular, taking a closer look, you can see Red Apple cigarettes on the shelves in the Minnie shop. The director invented this non-existent brand several decades ago in protest against advertising in films. Such cigarettes were smoked by the heroes of Tarantino’s films “Kill Bill”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Inglourious Basterds”. By the way, he gave this idea to his close friend Robert Rodriguez, who made them use the characters of his paintings “Planet of Fear” and “From Dusk Till Dawn”.
There is another connection between the film The Abominable Eight (reviews see below) and Inglourious Basterds. As Tim Roth said in one of his interviews, his character, Pete Hickox, is a direct ancestor of British lieutenant Archie Hickox from the Tarantino movie about World War II.
Positive feedback from viewers
It is somehow strange to expect to hear enthusiasm about the picture, the name of which sounds like “The Disgusting Eight”. The reviews of the viewers who watched her are very different. It should be borne in mind that the ardent fans of Tarantino mostly went to see the picture, since he has a rather large army of anti-worshipers who would never go to the cinema for a film in the credits of which is his last name.
So, when the "Abominable Eight" is discussed, reviews usually begin with bewilderment about the introduction too long. Most viewers point out that the slow process of moving along a snowy plain is too long and not at all characteristic of Tarantino. However, further events in the house, where a motley company is forced to hide from the blizzard, more than pay for the expectations of the scriptwriter's fans.
Judging by the reviews, the game of almost all the actors in the film deserves special praise. By the way, their casting also pleased the audience.
Negative reviews
There are many moviegoers who haven’t liked the Tarantino movie “The Disgusting Eight”. You can even hear reviews according to which he was considered empty. The blurring of the stories of heroes is most often criticized, especially since out of 8, only six can to some extent claim this title. In addition, some viewers, “spoiled” by scenes of violence, call what is happening on the screen, causing laughter and not taken seriously. You can also hear the accusation against the director, according to which he became proud and makes a movie, designed only to impress the “academics”.
Reviews
Regarding Tarantino’s picture “The Abominable Eight”, the opinions of filmmakers and critics also vary.
Of course, scolding the multiple winner of the Oscars is to some extent a bad manners. However, such daredevils who claim that Tarantino is not the same as before, are still there. Although it should be noted: most experts say that they like the film "The Disgusting Eight." The review of one famous American critic even more likely resembles a "speech to the glory of Tarantino," and in it his latest work is called the most mature and seasoned. In addition, many experts believe that the 53-year-old Tarantino managed to break the Hollywood stereotype that cinema is the art of young people.
Music
Since we are talking about reviews, it should be said a few words about the work of Ennio Morricone. Almost everyone who watched the picture, among its strengths, noted the music written by this famous composer. His work for the film "The Abominable Eight" (in Russian, the dubbing of dialogues was done quite well) received the Oscar for the best soundtrack. Some critics even called the main achievement of the picture 100% hit of "notes" Maricone on the Tarantino video sequence. Moreover, in some places the musical theme even dominates the dialogues and is more informative.
Is it worth it to watch the picture
If you have a free evening, which has nothing to take, even despite the presence of negative reviews, do not deny yourself the pleasure of watching the movie “The Abominable Eight”. The cast is really brilliant, and if you don’t even like the script, you can enjoy the game of many Hollywood stars who, as always, were on top, especially since Tarantino himself inspired them!
