Gordon Freeman is not only a famous character in the history of video games, but also the most mysterious. Being the protagonist of the cult Half-Life series, this silent scientist was remembered by the players not for his doctorate, but for his mount, which he uses as a weapon against aliens from another dimension.
Who is Gordon Freeman really? Not every player thinks about the origin of his favorite character. In the case of Freeman, his image is one of the most mysterious in the gaming industry. The developers themselves are in no hurry to share some details about their character, and almost all the information known today is the facts gathered by fans. Today we will try to open the veil behind which this brave scientist is hiding, and share the main details of his life.
Character Appearance
The main components of the external image of Gordon Freeman are a small beard and square-shaped glasses. The hero himself is rather thin, he has brown hair that always combes back, and wears his HEV costume almost all the time. The artist Ted Backman worked on the character: as far as we know, the developers did not turn to any specific actor for help - Gordon Freeman and his image are pure fiction.
It is noteworthy that in each game the hero looks a little different. The original cover of the first part of Half-Life depicts a character with a ponytail as a hairstyle. In the game Blue Shift, Gordon can be seen in a white coat, with a tie and a badge - the standard uniform of all the scientific staff of the complex. In the second part of Half-Life, Gordon Freeman's face was made a little older. In general, his appearance remained true to the "canon", and the main change was only the new HEV costume model
The Life of Gordon Freeman before the Black Mesa
From an early age, the hero showed great interest in physics, and was also interested in the works of Einstein, Hawking and Faintman. In the late 90s, as a student, he visited the University of Innsbruck, where he witnessed early experiments on teleportation. What he saw had a very strong effect on Gordon. From that moment, the idea of ββthe practical application of teleportation turns into a real passion for a young scientist.
In 1999, Freeman graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a Ph.D. After this, Gordon waited for academic studies conducted by the University of Innsbruck. Soon, the young physicist was very disappointed with the work, mainly due to the slow pace of development and lack of funding. He also began to suspect that the center was engaged in the creation of new weapons.
Jobs at Black Mesa
As a result, Gordon Freeman was invited to official work in the laboratory as a researcher. Despite all his fears, he hoped that the technologies being developed at Black Mesa could be sent in a peaceful direction.
The laboratory, which Freeman was sent to, was engaged in anomalous materials. At the beginning of the work, the hero was given a low third level of access and settled in a separate apartment of a dormitory owned by a research center. After that, Gordon took a short preparatory course in which he was introduced to the HEV costume.
Adventure Start: Half-Life Events
During one important experiment, an accident occurs that has catastrophic consequences. As a result, a portal opened into another dimension. From there, various aliens begin to arrive at the scientific complex - they are not too ceremonious with the local inhabitants, so soon the corridors of the Black Mesa are filled with corpses. The authorities send a detachment of soldiers to the scene of the incident, ordering a total "sweep".

After the accident, only a few employees managed to survive, among which our main character turned out to be exactly. Without thinking twice, he armed himself with the first mounted mount and went to meet headcrabs, human zombies and other alien monsters. For the sake of saving his own life, he has to embark on a long and dangerous journey to the Lambda sector, and then into the world of Zen - the boundary plane between two dimensions. There Gordon defeats the main boss of the game - a creature named Nihilant, after which he returns to our world and is placed in stasis. This is where the events of the first game end, and the adventures of Dr. Freeman continue in the next three games of the series. However, the story is still not finished, and fans are still waiting for the return of their beloved hero!
