The drug "Lugol's solution": instruction

Lugol's solution is perhaps the most famous of the preparations intended for the treatment of the throat with angina. This wonderful local antiseptic is used to treat pathologies of not only ENT organs, but also other organs and systems of the human body.

Lugol's solution is a spray containing twelve and a half milligrams of active iodine in each milliliter, as well as auxiliary substances - potassium iodide and glycerol.

The pharmacological effect of the drug "Lugol's solution" describes the instructions for its use as follows. The active substance of this medicine is elemental iodine. It is characterized by pronounced antimicrobial properties, a local irritant effect, and in a fairly high concentration - a cauterizing effect.

Local exposure is due to the ability of the active substance to precipitate proteins of body tissues. Preparations whose active substances split off elementary iodine cause a much less irritating effect, while iodides have a local irritant effect only at a very high concentration.

Also, iodine-containing drugs have a very noticeable effect on the functioning of the thyroid gland. In the event of a deficiency of this element, they help restore the synthesis of thyroid hormones by the iron , and when introduced into an organism that is sufficiently saturated with iodine, they reduce the production of these hormones.

With atherosclerosis, such substances can lower the concentration of cholesterol and slow down blood coagulation.

In the presence of syphilitic gum, iodine, accumulating in them, softens them and resolves. But in the tuberculosis foci from its effects, the inflammatory process only intensifies.

In small doses, iodine stimulates lactation, and in massive doses it inhibits.

Indications for use of the drug "Lugol's solution" instructions for its use include the following. External use: trauma, myalgia, wounds, infectious and inflammatory skin pathologies. Topical application: chronic form of tonsillitis, purulent otitis media, atrophic rhinitis, varicose and trophic ulcers, infected burns, wounds, fresh chemical and thermal burns of the first and second degrees. Internal use: for tertiary syphilis, as well as for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.

When performing this procedure, you need to be careful, because touching the back of the larynx can cause vomiting.

When giving Lugol's solution to children, you need to ask them to hold their breath at the time of injection. Applying the medicine externally, they treat the affected areas of the skin.

Locally, the drug "Lugol's solution", the instruction for its use recommends the use of: for washing supratonsillar spaces and lacunae - four to five procedures, taking breaks between them in two to three days; for the purpose of irrigation of the nasopharynx - two to three times a week, for two to three months; for washing the ears and burying in them - for two to four weeks; with burns, gauze napkins applied to damaged surfaces are moistened with the drug as necessary.

Lugol's solution (spray) has some side effects (the instruction mentions this). In the case of using the drug externally, it is skin irritation, and with long-term use on large areas of the lesion surface - the phenomenon of iodism (urticaria, rhinitis, salivation, Quincke's edema, acne, lacrimation). In the case of internal administration, skin allergic manifestations, nervousness, tachycardia, increased sweating, sleep disturbances, diarrhea (in people over forty years old) can occur.
