Delirium tremens - a difficult test for loved ones

Surely many have heard that people with alcohol dependence are not limited to liver diseases. As a rule, long “drunkenness” is replaced by another “present” - delirium tremens. It does not occur from scratch and is preceded by a long, sometimes several months, binge.

Delirium tremens is treatable, but almost always the patient is expected to have consequences.
But let's look in order, what is the truth about this state of mind and body, and what is surrounded by popular speculation, since alas, on the Internet you can often find only horror stories about this ailment, and not true and accurate information.

Delirium tremens: symptoms and treatment.

According to the behavior of a person, one can predict that degradation is taking place in his brain. If there was a prolonged binge, plus the patient's age over 40 years, then it is more likely that sooner or later (usually sooner) delirium tremens will occur. Moreover, if his sleep worsened, he became anxious. And even if a person stops drinking due to poor health, this does not mean that now everything will begin to improve. It is after a sharp stop in the consumption of alcohol, usually after 2 or 3-4 days, delirium tremens occurs.

It is dangerous because in this state a person is capable of crazy actions and becomes dangerous not only for himself, but also for those around him. For example, it may seem to him that devils live in the house and in order to get rid of their presence, he sets fire to his house. Sometimes forgetting, without even thinking that other people can live in the house. Or the patient in an attack grabs a knife and does not realize that he is a living person, he imagines, say, the image of a dead man. Therefore, many are wondering: a husband, son, daughter have delirium tremens. What to do?

By the way, according to statistics, it is mainly men than women who are affected, but this is also largely because there are more explicit alcoholics among men, while women drink quietly, a little, but often, and do not go into a bout for a month. Although, of course, the danger of alcoholism does not decrease from this. If you are forced to live with such a person, then you really must be endowed with enormous, simply inhuman patience. People whose relatives drink and fall into a state of alcoholic coma, or who have delirium tremens, say that living in the same territory with such a person is a real hell. And that says a lot.

If possible, you need to go to a safe place or at least protect your children. It’s another matter that in practice there’s nowhere to go to close ones, and driving an alcoholic out of the house means condemning him to death, and few will decide on such a desperate step, especially if you have a blood bond with this person. The situation seems hopeless.

In such cases, close people go to court to limit the legal capacity of the person. Custody is established over him. He cannot buy alcohol, as he is legally incompetent and, moreover, he is registered and put in specialized clinics. This, of course, is ideal. But in practice, all this requires costs and mental strength to go to the courts and courts, to negotiate with doctors and more. So people live, turning to specialists, only when a person begins another seizure. After a few weeks, it is recovering (although the full recovery, as described above, cannot be discussed) and everything starts again.
Therefore, alcoholism must be exterminated in the earliest stages, and not sit and not wait for it to "resolve itself" or a person will change their mind.

Alas, as practice shows, not everyone consciously decides to break with drunkenness. There are no more than 40% of them. And those who decide, often stumble again.
Alcoholism is the scourge of our society and there is no antidote to it yet.
