In what cases is an ointment prescribed?
Many do not know in which cases Betadine ointment is used. According to the instructions, this form is necessary for:

- the course of nonspecific or mixed infections;
- inflammatory vaginal pathologies occurring in both acute and chronic form;
- mycotic lesions (including those that appeared after treatment with antibiotics);
- genital herpes type;
- gardnerellosis, chlamydia, trichomoniasis.
This is stated in the instructions for use with Betadine. In addition, antibacterial suppositories can be used for the purpose of vaginal debridement before various gynecological manipulations.
When suppositories with povidone iodine are administered after sexual intercourse without protection, the likelihood of an STD is reduced. A similar effect is achieved when using candles within two hours after an intimate relationship.
Structure
As the instructions to Betadine indicate, an antibacterial solution of 10% concentration contains 100 milligrams of the active component, which is represented by povidone-iodine. In addition, there are: dehydrated citric acid; glycerol; prepared water; sodium hydroxide solution; disodium dihydrogen phosphate; nonoxynol.
In ointment, the same amount of active substance as in one milliliter of solution. Auxiliary components are as follows: prepared water; sodium bicarbonate; macrogol.
Suppositories contain two hundred milligrams of an antibacterial substance - povidone-iodine. Candles additionally contain macrogol.
Therapeutic properties
It must be said that the medicinal properties of the product do not coincide with the name of the active substance. Betadine has an antiseptic and clear antimicrobial effect. In this case, a complex effect on the body is created due to iodine and polyvinylpyrrolidone. When contact with the epithelial layer occurs, iodine ions are gradually released, it binds to protein amino acid groups of pathogenic cells. The result of such chemical reactions is the formation of iodamines. A specific mechanism of the effect of the drug reduces the likelihood of resistance to the composition during long-term treatment.
The drug has bactericidal characteristics. During use, a clear antiviral, antiprotozoal and antimycotic activity appears, both gram-positive and gram-negative pathogenic microorganisms are sensitive to the drug. Mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis are not susceptible to povidone iodine.
The effect of this drug is more prolonged compared to drugs that contain inorganic iodine.
The level of staining of the skin cover indicates the effectiveness of the drug. A slight locally irritating effect is observed.
Each of the dosage forms does not contribute to the addiction of the body, does not have a toxic effect. The regular use of suppositories resumes the normal microflora of the vagina, while the accompanying clinical picture (significant burning and itching) is eliminated and irritation does not appear.
With local use, absorption into the bloodstream is small. The active substance enters the shallow epidermal layers. After the use of vaginal suppositories, the pathogenic flora dies within a minute.
Instructions for use
In accordance with the instructions, the Betadine solution is used in diluted form. The diluted antiseptic has a concentration of 1: 100 or 1:10.
To disinfect certain areas (without obvious damage), you do not need to dilute the solution, the exposure time is 1-2 minutes.
When treating surfaces of wounds, affected areas (bacterial or fungal flora), it is advisable to use an aqueous solution of the drug, which is diluted 1:10.
Hygienic treatment should be carried out using Betadine aqueous solution, it is diluted in a ratio of 1: 100.
To gargle, you need to use the drug in a diluted form 1:10, it acts almost like a spray with an iodine base.
When it is required to rinse the throat of a child, you need to monitor the process, preventing the solution from swallowing.
When using Betadine ointment, according to the instructions for use, it should be applied evenly to the affected area with a thin layer, the doctor individually determines the frequency of use. Many patients are wondering if men are allowed to use the drug. The cream can be used, the therapeutic regimen for men is the same as for women.
According to the instructions, Betadine suppositories are inserted deep into the vagina when hygiene procedures are performed.
With acute vaginitis, suppositories can be used twice a day, the course of antibacterial therapy is seven days. If they occur in acute or chronic form, it is advisable to use a candle once a day (preferably before going to bed), the healing therapeutic course lasts two weeks. The use of the drug may be prolonged by medical advice.
Treatment with Betadine cannot be carried out from the twelfth week of pregnancy and during lactation. The problem of the appropriateness of the therapy is determined individually.
It will take constant monitoring of the thyroid gland in infants and babies whose mothers were treated with Betadine.

It is not allowed to use after animal or insect bites. Avoid contact with the eyes of the patient.
Drug Cross Interactions
It is forbidden to combine with other antiseptic preparations containing mercury, alkalis and certain enzymes.

Local allergic symptoms due to iodine are possible (severe itching, redness). In this case, you need to cancel the treatment with the drug.
