The active component of salicylic ointment is salicylic acid - an effective local anti-inflammatory agent. Currently, it is produced industrially, but for the first time this substance was isolated from natural raw materials - willow bark. In honor of this tree, it was named ("willow" in Latin - salix). In addition to anti-inflammatory, salicylic ointment also has a keratolytic effect: it helps exfoliate the skin and, as a result, its regeneration.
Salicylic ointment, the use of which can be recommended for infectious and other skin lesions, is available in various concentrations - 2%, 5% or 10%. It is shown, first of all, with acne: reviews suggest that this tool helps to get rid of unaesthetic and painful rashes in the shortest possible time. Beauticians recommend that in case of problematic skin, a night cream be prepared on the basis of a two percent salicylic ointment, taking it in equal parts with zinc ointment and the Bepanten plus antiseptic cream, the active ingredient of which is dexpanthenol. During the first week, it is applied to the face every evening, and then, after reaching a visible result, two to three times a week. Salicylic ointment, the use of which in this case gives excellent results, has a drying effect, so owners of sensitive skin should use it with caution.
The drug is successfully used in the complex treatment of seborrhea, psoriasis, ichthyosis, as well as pyoderma, diaper rash, eczema. In these cases, use a tool of 2% concentration, and for burns - 5%. It is applied to the affected areas of the skin, which should be pre-treated by carefully removing dead particles. Open wounds are lubricated with an antiseptic. If blisters formed on the skin as a result of burns, they are opened before application, and the wound surface is treated with any antiseptic solution. Salicylic ointment, the use of which can significantly improve the condition of the skin, is applied in a thin layer (it is better to do this at night). From above, the affected area is covered with a sterile napkin - it is advisable to fix it with a bandage. Change the bandage at least once every two to three days.
To eliminate keratinization of the skin and corns, a 10% salicylic ointment is used. Its use can last as long as necessary to achieve and consolidate the desired effect. However, no more than three weeks (the minimum treatment period is six days). Instead of salicylic, a combined sulfur-salicylic ointment is often used: the instruction speaks of its effectiveness in seborrhea and psoriasis. In addition to keratolytic, this drug also has antimicrobial and antiparasitic effects.
During the use of salicylic ointment, especially a high concentration, side effects can be observed - skin itching, irritation, burning. This is due to individual intolerance to salicylic acid. In this case, treatment should be stopped and seek medical advice.
Accidental ingestion of the drug leads to rather unpleasant consequences: nausea and vomiting, pain in the esophagus and stomach. Sometimes patients need gastric lavage and forced diuresis. In general, salicylic ointment (reviews confirm this) is a fairly safe drug that effectively cleanses the skin.
Ointment should not be used simultaneously with other external agents, without first discussing this possibility with a doctor. Store it at a temperature of up to + 25 degrees, in a place inaccessible to children, no more than three years. Contraindication to its use is individual intolerance. In addition, since the effect of this drug on the body of pregnant and lactating women has not been studied, it is better for them to refrain from using it.
