Betadine suppositories belong to the group of antiseptic disinfectants. The composition of vaginal suppositories includes povidone iodine and macrogol 1000.

Iodamine bacteria are formed by iodine with cell proteins during release from the complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone, which occurs when it comes in contact with the mucous membranes and skin. Thus, due to coagulation, the death of microorganisms occurs. Betadine suppositories have a bactericidal effect on gram-negative (except for Koch's bacillus) and gram-positive bacteria.

The action of the drug develops in the first fifteen to thirty seconds, while most microorganisms die in less than a minute. The process is accompanied by discoloration of iodine, which is an indicator of the effectiveness of the drug.

Suppositories, due to their water-soluble base, do not irritate.

Betadine suppositories are used for vaginitis (acute and chronic course, for non-specific and mixed infections), for candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, genital herpes, trichomoniasis. The medication is also prescribed before surgery as a prophylaxis of infectious complications.

Before using suppositories, it is necessary to conduct hygiene procedures. Betadine suppositories are inserted into the vagina (deeply) up to two times a day, one at a time. Wash hands thoroughly after use.

With acute vaginitis, the course duration is seven days. With a subacute and chronic form of the disease, therapy is extended to two weeks. If necessary, treatment can be extended.

The use of the medication can cause flushing, itching. With such allergic manifestations, Betadine suppositories (an analogue - Iodoxide or Enterodez) must be replaced with another drug.

The medication is contraindicated in case of hyperthyroidism, thyroid adenoma, herpetiform dermatitis of Dühring, during lactation. The drug is not prescribed in cases of the use of radioactive iodine, in childhood (up to eight years), as well as in cases of hypersensitivity to iodine and other components.

During pregnancy, the medication is contraindicated from the third month of the term. The question of the appointment of the drug during lactation and pregnancy can only be decided by the attending physician.

In infants and newborns, it is necessary to monitor the function of the thyroid gland if their mothers used Betadine.

Coloring on tissues and skin after applying suppositories is easily washed off with water. In order to avoid staining, it is recommended to use sanitary pads.

In cases of impaired thyroid function, the use of the medication is allowed only under medical supervision.

The use of the drug in girls of eight years and older is allowed. In this case, care must be taken when introducing a suppository into the vagina of virgins.

Data on an overdose of the drug in medical practice are not fixed.

The drug is not compatible with other antiseptic and disinfectant drugs, especially those that include mercury, enzymes, and alkalis.

To store the medication, you should choose a dry place inaccessible to children, protected from moisture, with a temperature of five to fifteen degrees.

The drug is suitable for five years.

It should be noted that contrary to the opinion of many, Betadine does not have a contraceptive effect. This drug has only antiseptic and disinfectant properties associated with iodine, which is part of the group of halogen antiseptics.
