Calendula ointment - indications for use

Calendula ointment is a light brown mass, which differs may have a greenish tint and a characteristic odor. The specified tool, however, is poorly absorbed, but it has a reparative, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect.

In this preparation there are essential oils and flavonoids acting against gram-positive bacteria. They take part in the production of collagen of the vascular wall, regulate the colloidal state of the intercellular substance. Calendula ointment helps to accelerate the process of tissue contraction around the wound, also due to its use, granulation and epithelization of the wound defect are stimulated.

If the patient has chronic venous insufficiency, edema, cramps, pain, ulcers and trophic disorders, varicose eczema are reduced.

After the calendula ointment is applied, heat is felt, since it has a slight irritating effect. 1-2 hours after application, the anti-inflammatory effect begins already on the deeper layers of the skin.

Calendula ointment: instructions for use

The specified drug is used in the presence of infected wounds, burns, cuts, anal fissures. It is also used for varicose veins of the legs and thrombophlebitis, in the presence of pressure sores and trophic ulcers.

The drug should be applied to dry and clean skin. If there is a need to apply ointment to wounds with purulent discharge, then they must first be cleaned of necrotic tissue.

If calendula ointment is used for burns, cuts or wounds, then it must be rubbed until a feeling of warmth appears, and then cover with a sterile dressing. Hands after applying the medicine must be washed. The dressing is replaced 2-3 times a day. On an area equal to the knee joint, it is enough to apply 2-4 grams of ointment.

In the presence of anal fissures, tampons with ointment are introduced into the rectum, but before that, you must either wait for the spontaneous cleansing of the intestine, or put a cleansing enema.

For the treatment of varicose veins, the medicine is applied to the affected area and is not rubbed. Use calendula ointment for acne.

During the treatment of trophic and varicose ulcers, the drug is used in the form of applications. First, the skin is washed and covered with zinc ointment, and then a calendula ointment is applied in a thick layer and covered with parchment paper, and then a bandage is applied. The duration of such treatment is up to three weeks, while the dressings must be changed up to 3 times a day.

Among the possible side effects, it is worth noting the possibility of allergic reactions.

Contraindications to the use of calendula ointment is hypersensitivity to plants of the family Asteraceae.

The specified drug is poorly absorbed, so there is practically no risk of drug interactions. If glycerin and dimethyl sulfoxide are used together with the specified ointment, this enhances its systemic absorption, and then the ointment penetrates deeper into the tissue at the sites of its application.

Since the mechanism of action of this medicine in young children has not been fully studied, it cannot be used until the age of 6. After using calendula ointment, the reaction does not decrease, therefore, it is not contraindicated when driving vehicles. If a person smokes, this weakens the effect produced by the specified drug and accelerates the metabolism of flavonoids.

Since calendula ointment is used only externally, it must not be allowed to get on the mucous membranes.

An overdose of the drug with proper use is practically excluded, it is possible only if the ointment is taken orally. If this happens, then the stomach is washed and antacids are prescribed .
