Sophie had long wanted to visit Italy and persuades Victor to take her with him. Upon arrival, the girl expects a vivid romantic trip, however, Victor is so busy choosing delicacies and drinks for his restaurant that he has almost no time for his lover.
Sophie alone has to enjoy the beauties of the city and its unique atmosphere. Once, wandering the streets, she stumbles upon a "Juliet's house." On the wall of this building, girls in love attach letters in which they turn to Shakespeare's heroine. At sunset, Sophie sees someone take off all these envelopes and take them away. Later, the girl finds out that there are several women who call themselves "secretaries of Juliet." It is they who respond to numerous messages.

The next day, Sophie helps to collect letters from the wall and accidentally finds a message written in the 60s by a resident of London named Claire, who once came to Italy and fell unconscious in love with Lorenzo Bartolini. He persuaded the girl to run with him, but she was frightened and did not dare to do so. Claire expressed her pain from lost love on several pages. The journalist answers this touching message.
A couple of days later, Sophie Hall meets the arrogant Englishman Charlie, who accuses her of the fact that because of this act his grandmother set out to find the love of her life. This is where the story begins, which later inspires Sophie to write a novel.
