Pharmacological action of the drug

The drug "Heptral" refers to hepatoprotectors, also having an antidepressant effect. In addition, ademetionine (active substance) can have cholekinetic and choleretic effects. The drug is involved in the processes of transmethylation, while donating the methyl group of phospholipids of proteins, cell membranes, neurotransmitters and hormones, then trans sulfation - the precursor of taurine, glutathione and cysteine. Ademethionine can increase the amount of glutamine in the liver, and taurine and cysteine in the blood plasma, reduce the amount of methionine in the serum, thereby normalizing the metabolic reaction in the liver.

The drug has a choleretic effect, which is due to an increase in the polarization and mobility of the liver cell membranes, due to the stimulation of the conversion of phosphatidylcholine into them. Due to this, the function of transport systems associated with the membranes of hepatocytes of bile acids is significantly improved and promotes the withdrawal of bile acids.

Hepatoprotective and choleretic effects of the drug can last up to three months.

Pharmacokinetics

Thanks to a special enteric-soluble membrane, the tablets reach the duodenum and dissolve there. After a single dose, the maximum concentration of heptral in the blood is reached somewhere after a few hours.

When administered orally, the bioavailability is 5%, with intramuscular administration - 95%. The drug may slightly bind to serum proteins. The medicine can penetrate the BBB; its presence is always noted, regardless of the route of administration, in the cerebrospinal fluid.
