Vitamin B6, or folic acid, is one of the most necessary substances for the normal functioning of the body. This element takes an active part in metabolic processes and DNA synthesis, forms blood cells and strengthens the immune system, and also has a beneficial effect on the digestive system. It is of particular importance for pregnant women in connection with the need for its receipt for the normal formation of the neural tube and to reduce the risk of developing various defects in the fetus. In addition, folic acid is directly involved in the formation of the placenta.
With a significant lack of vitamin B6 in the body, there is a risk of developing anemia. This common disease is the cause of a decrease in the number of red blood cells and a violation of their functions, since the bulk of them come out of the bone marrow, not having time to mature. With a long course of this process, loss of appetite occurs, fatigue and irritability increase. Vomiting and diarrhea may be added to these symptoms. Possible changes in the skin, sores in the oral cavity and pharynx.
When to take the drug?
Folic acid, the use of which becomes especially important during pregnancy, is one of the most significant elements necessary for the proper development of the fetus.
Vitamin B6:
- participates in DNA synthesis;
- prevents the development of defects in the neural tube and brain in the embryo;
- takes part in the processes of cell growth and division;
- is one of the constituent elements in the formation of the brain and nervous system of the fetus;
- participates in the formation of platelets, white blood cells and red blood cells;
- important for the development and growth of the placenta and blood vessels of the uterus.
Folic acid, the use of which contributes to the correct formation of the neural tube of the child, is especially necessary in the first twelve weeks after conception. Therefore, it is prescribed already when planning a pregnancy. The need for this vitamin in women is up to 800 mcg per day, and with an acute shortage of this substance in the body, the dose should be increased.
Do not be afraid of an overdose of folic acid, since this condition is extremely rare. Excess vitamin is excreted naturally, without exerting a negative effect on the body. During pregnancy, this process is accelerated. An overdose of the drug is possible only with the use of doses increased hundreds of times, which is 20-30 tablets per day.
Folic acid, the use of which is necessary during breastfeeding, is prescribed both as a separate drug, and in combination with multivitamins in a dosage of 300 μg per day. This amount is enough to provide the mother and child with the substance. When taking an increased dose, an excess of folic acid is excreted from the body of a woman in a natural way and will not harm either her or the baby.
Folic acid, the use of which during pregnancy is considered necessary even by opponents of pharmacological drugs, is needed at least for preventive purposes. This will allow the expectant mother to protect herself from many problems and reduce the risk of developing various pathologies of the child.
Folic Acid - Indications
Vitamin B6 intake is extremely necessary for various pathological conditions, namely: for glossitis, anemia, diarrhea, liver failure, unbalanced diet, fever, alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver, and also with prolonged stress.
Folic Acid - Contraindications
Like all medicines, vitamin B6 can cause an allergic reaction. Also, its use is extremely contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to folic acid and with pernicious anemia.
