Bisacodyl suppositories: how and when to apply?

Bisacodyl suppositories are a laxative drug that is often used for constipation. The mechanism of its action is to increase the secretion of mucus in the distal intestine, accelerating and enhancing its peristaltic movements.

Suppositories "Bisacodyl" provide direct stimulation of the endings of nerves located in the mucosa of the large intestine. This drug acts in contact, only a small part (not more than 5%) is absorbed from the intestinal lumen, after which conjugation in the liver occurs, by inclusion in the intestinal-hepatic circulation, it is partially excreted by the kidneys.

Bisacodyl suppositories are used for acute constipation, hypotension, or insufficient peristalsis of the colon (for example, in elderly patients), intestinal atony after a change in diet, long-term bed rest, and if necessary bowel movements before medical examinations (endoscopic or X-ray), before surgery , during childbirth and severe diseases of the cardiovascular system.

Apply this drug to the rectum (rectally), one suppository at night.

Bisacodyl suppositories, like other laxatives, can cause side effects. Perhaps the appearance of colic-like pain in the intestinal zone, with high doses, severe diarrhea develops. If this drug is used for a long time in high doses, then diarrhea can develop with excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes, which will lead to the development of seizures, muscle weakness, arterial hypotension.

The use of bisacodyl has several contraindications: strangulated hernia, peritonitis, acute proctitis, lack of potassium, diverticulitis or appendicitis, cystitis, acute hemorrhoids, intestinal obstruction, bleeding from the uterus or gastrointestinal tract, spastic constipation, hypersensitivity to this drug.

In addition, with caution, it must be prescribed to patients with pathological processes localized in the kidneys and liver.

This drug often interacts with other drugs, which necessitates a dosage adjustment. It is possible to increase the "leakage" of potassium from the body while prescribing bisacodyl with drugs that reduce the potassium content. Its effect decreases with the simultaneous administration of opiates, psychotropic substances, cholestyramine. With its use, increased sensitivity to cardiac glycosides is possible, which is due to the loss of potassium by the body. The resorption of other drugs can be significantly reduced with its use.
An overdose causes colic-like pain, signs of dehydration, especially in children or the elderly. In severe cases, if necessary, the stomach is washed, adequate rehydration is carried out.

When using the medicine, it is necessary to keep potassium in the blood serum under control. Particular attention must be paid to the electrolyte balance of children and elderly patients.
