As the artist himself said, the year he was born was 1933 (the city of Smolensk), however, during the Second World War, his documents were lost, and a mistake was made in the new ones, indicating 1934 year of birth. Edward's father, Anatoly, worked as a mechanic, and his mother Elena as an accountant. However, even before the war, they divorced. Soon another person appeared in the family - Edward's stepfather.

Gil's childhood fell on difficult war years. The boy was then evacuated, after which he ended up in an orphanage located in the Ufa settlement Raevky. There Edward had a hard time. Several times he tried to escape to the front, but he was constantly returned, since he was then only 9 years old.

Fortunately, the mother and stepfather survived, and after the liberation of Smolensk, the family reunited. True, Edward Gil began to suffer from dystrophy due to malnutrition. But pretty soon he got better.

In 1949, Gil decided to enter the printing college and went to Leningrad for this. He successfully passed the exams and became a 1st year student.
