Chekhov street

History

The building of the theater in Serpukhov is a cultural monument. Its founder was the former opera singer of the Bolshoi Theater Govorov, nee Serpukhovich. He persuaded the local merchant Malakhovtsev to build a theater in the city. True, initially the building was more like a warehouse. The reason for this was the merchant’s disbelief that this idea would be successful. In case of failure, he planned to use the building for commercial purposes. However, Govorov insisted that the scene meet all professional requirements.

In 1915, the construction of the theater was completed. Fears of the merchant did not materialize. The Serpukhov audience fell in love with the theater and enjoyed visiting it. In 1938, thanks to the artistic director of the troupe, Yuryev Yu.F., it included not only professional actors, but also talented participants in amateur performances. Boris Kamchatov, permanent director of the city theater in 1942-1985, put a lot of effort into the development of the cultural institution.

With the onset of the 1990s, difficult times came for the troupe, since the premises could be transferred to private ownership. But after the restoration, namely in 2005, the theater reopened the doors for its fans. It is located at Chekhov street, 58/27.
