Katherine Hickland was born on February 11, 1956 in the resort town of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her father Arthur Hickland worked as a dentist, mother Mary Hickland also worked in the field of dentistry. Katherine has a brother and sister.
She graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School in 1974 and entered Florida Atlantic University. But after studying for two years, the girl decided to leave the university and work as a stewardess in the national airline. Six months later, Hickland left the airline, making a commercial for her. She decided to pursue an acting career.
