This article is a summary of Oblomov chapter by chapter. Ivan Alexandrovich Goncharov devoted ten years of his life to creating the plot of the novel. The contemporaries of the writer spoke of an obvious paradox: the protagonist, endowed by the author with laziness brought to the highest levels, attracted the close attention of all Russian society.
First part
The novel begins with a description of the interior of the home, about which we are briefly informed. Oblomov (chapter 1 of the work, in particular) covers in detail one day in the life of the landowner Ilya Ilyich Oblomov. Removable St. Petersburg four-room apartment. Three of the four rooms are non-residential. Ilya Ilyich hardly leaves the room, in which there are two sofas, a mahogany dressing table and several screens. He spends his day on one of the sofas: eats, receives guests. After lunch, falls into a drowsy state. Servant Zahar is a little less lazy than the master. There are dust, dirt, spots in the apartment, but Oblomov himself is not at all dragging on this.
A summary of the chapters in turn introduces us to the unfolding events. In the second chapter, the reader meets visitors - friends of the landowner: Alekseev, Volkov, Penkin, Sudbinsky. All of them are trying to captivate Ilya Ilyich with their plans. They want him to follow them. But their attempts are in vain. For Oblomov, any business or undertaking is initially uninteresting.
A summary of Oblomov for chapters III and IV introduces us to another guest of the landowner - Mikhey Andreyevich Tarantyev. He is both a talker and a fraudster, striving to seize the property of Ilya Ilyich. At stake is property of tens of thousands of rubles. Allegedly taking care of Oblomov’s well-being, Tarantyev convinces him to move to the Vyborg side and promises to introduce Agafya Pshenitsyna to her godfather. In fact, he carries out a plan together with Mukhoyarov, Agafya’s brother, to ruin Ilya Ilyich.
The fifth and sixth chapters return us twelve years ago - to the attempts of young Oblomov to make a career in St. Petersburg. The hereditary nobleman had the rank of college secretary. However, he was afraid of the authorities to such an extent that, mistakenly sending a letter instead of Astrakhan to Arkhangelsk, he got scared and quit his job. And for over ten years now he has been messing around. From the village of Oblomovka, his estate, he receives less and less income - the clerk steals. But to reorganize his economy so that it becomes profitable, Oblomov lacks decisiveness.
The seventh and eighth chapters tell in more detail about Oblomov's servant - Zakhar. This is an old-school footman. He is honest, devoted to his master, as was customary for courtyards in the last century. Caring about the interests of Oblomov, Zakhar does not lose sight of the rogue Tarantyev. But at the same time, the laziness of the master, as in a mirror, was reflected in him.
The ninth chapter of the novel "Oblomov" is special, key. Indeed, it fragmentarily shows the inferiority of raising a child by the landlord parents. A dream consists of three visions. First: a seven-year-old boy in the Oblomov estate of his parents. He is surrounded by petty guardianship; he is inculcated with the cult of inaction. The second episode of sleep is the story of a nanny of fairy tales and epics. In their virtual world, the landowner Oblomov lives, the world of real affairs for him since childhood has become boring. The third episode of sleep: studying in elementary school. Teacher - Ivan Bogdanovich Stolz, German, clerk. Together with Ilyusha, the son of a teacher, Andrei, is studying. They are both active and dynamic. The studies did not raise an active person from the landowner’s son, since all the other people in his circle, except Stoltsev, lead a lazy, drowsy way of life.
The tenth, eleventh chapters are ironic about dirt in Oblomov’s apartment. While he sleeps, the servant Zakhar either gossips with his neighbors, or goes to drink beer. Moreover, turning back, he finds the owner still sleeping.
The second part of
Before the reader is Andrei Ivanovich Shtolts. A dynamic and positive character finally flows into the summary of Oblomov by chapter (as, naturally, into the novel itself). Andrei graduated from the university with a rank equivalent to that of a colonel; according to the ranking table, he served as a lawyer. Having retired at the age of thirty, he took up business. He is sent with particularly important missions to Europe, entrusted with the development of projects.

The third and fifth chapters of the second part are devoted to Stolz’s efforts to stir up Oblomov and arouse his interest in life. Andrei Ivanovich drew up a plan to help a friend: first, go abroad with him, then establish business in the village, then take care of the position and service. He introduced a friend to Olga Ilyinskaya. Ilya Ilyich fell in love with this woman. Stolz went on a business trip, agreeing with Oblomov to meet in London, and then travel together. But Oblomov did not leave Russia. The sixth and seventh chapters trace the development of Oblomov’s feelings for Olga Ilyinskaya, her declaration of love and proposal to get married. And here the summary of Oblomov’s chapters describes a classic love story.
The third part
The mutual feeling of Ilya Oblomov and Olga Ilyina flares up. Olga is ready to get married. But when the time comes for decisive actions, Oblomov’s love begins to counteract his inertness, notes of fear slip through his thoughts, “what others will think.” At the same time, Mikhei Andreevich Tarantyev, “courting” the main character, gets his signature under an enslaving contract to rent a new apartment on the Vyborg side. He introduces Oblomov to his godfather Agafia Pshenitsyna. Agafyi’s brother, Ivan Matveevich Mukhoyarov, actually “plays one game” with Tarantyev, wanting to cash in on the property of the protagonist by deception. Mukhoyarov convinces the guest of his sister, Ilya Ilyich, that he needs to travel to his estate, the village of Oblomovka, in order to improve business affairs. Oblomov gets sick.
Fourth part
Having become ill, Oblomov remains in the house of Agafya Pshenitsyna, who has fallen in love with him and sincerely cares for him. A woman in love even lays her jewelry so that Ilya Ilyich feeds and strengthens. Having conspired, Ivan Matveevich Mukhoyarov and Mikhei Andreevich Tarantyev decided on deception and forgery. Frightening Oblomov by compromising his extramarital relations with Pshenitsyna, they take a receipt for 10,000 rubles from him. Agafya, blindly trusting her brother, signs herself a debt for the same 10,000 rubles in his name.
Stolz in Paris meets with Ilyinskaya, takes care of her. Mutual feeling flares up, lovers get married. Then Stolz returns to Russia, arrives on the Vyborg side to Oblomov and actively helps a friend. He temporarily rents Oblomovka, expels the thief-clerk of the Impacted, protege of Mukhoyarov. He learns about Oblomov's receipt. The next day, the general, informed by him, expels Mukhoyarov from service. Tarantiev rushes on the run.
Oblomov's welfare has improved, but the disease is progressing. Soon he bears an apoplexy blow, and then death. About the upbringing of a son in common with Agafia - Andryusha, before his very death he asks Stolz. For Agafya, with the departure of Ilya Ilyich, life lost its meaning, as if "a heart was taken out of the chest." Faithful servant Zakhar chose to beggar, visiting the grave of the master, but not return to Oblomovka. In the house of Agafia, the wife of Mukhoyarov is the boss. However, a glimmer of hope still illuminates the ending of the novel. Andryusha Oblomov, having acquired a second family, will undoubtedly receive proper education, and his life will become more substantial.
