Theater History
The Mossovet Theater opened its doors in 1923. Created by director S.I. Prokofiev. From 1925 to 1940 he directed the theater of E.O. Lyubimov-Lanskoy.
After him, until 1977, the troupe was led by a student of E. Vakhtangov and K. Stanislavsky - actor and director Yuri Zavadsky. He invited famous artists to work: Faina Ranevskaya, Georgy Zhzhenov, Rostislav Plyatt, Mikhail Kozakov, Lyubov Orlova and others.
The Moscow City Council Theater in 1964 received academic status.
The main director, and then the artistic director in 1985 was Pavel Osipovich Chomsky. He kept traditions, but at the same time he was looking for new forms and ways of work.
He opened a small stage, which was intended for experimental productions. The first performance played on it was Caligula. The main role in it was played by Oleg Menshikov.
Since that time, the Theater of the Moscow City Council has had two stages. The hall opened by P. Chomsky today is called "Under the Roof", it is designed for 120 spectators, and the main - for 894 seats.
Today, the troupe often goes on tour to other cities of Russia and abroad. Artists visited France, Poland, the USA, Finland, Bulgaria, etc.
