Sanctum. Actors and a fictional story

A group of people in a confined space and the path to salvation - this plot is often used by scriptwriters. As a rule, such films do not differ in originality, but not in the case of the Sanctum thriller. The actors and the crew led by James Cameron found themselves in extreme conditions.

Storyline

In 1988, a group of 22 cavers conducted research in one of the caves. During operation, the weather conditions changed dramatically - due to a cyclonic storm, the cave was flooded, and 15 scientists fell into a real trap. People in the depths and rescuers on the surface needed to find a new way out. Researchers spent more than a day in the water, but in the end everyone survived.

It was these events that formed the basis of the script for the painting “Sanctum”. The film turned out incredibly spectacular thanks to the technologies that were used when shooting the famous “Avatar”. Unfortunately, the audience will have a dramatic ending, because few of the main characters will be able to rise to the surface.

A story with a sad ending

Before filming in the film “Sanctum”, the actors underwent serious training. In one interview, Richard Roxburgh shared his impressions. For the sake of the role, he, along with Joan Griffith, Reese Wakefield, Alice Parkinson and other colleagues, mastered rock climbing and scuba diving. It is worth noting that the author of the idea, Andrew White and his friend James Cameron, are very familiar with diving. Together, they explored the depths of the ocean during the filming of Titanic, Bismarck Expedition, and Aliens from the Abyss.

The largest cavern network in Papua New Guinea turned out to be the focus of cavers. Scientists are trying to find access to the sea, but their plans are disrupted by a tropical storm that began two days earlier. Water arrives at the caves, cutting off the return trip. The only option for salvation is to find the very way out, sinking deeper into the caves.

A vivid picture of the underwater world is one of the main advantages of the film “Sanctum”. Actors, among whom there are no world stars, did an excellent job. Colossal tension, hope for salvation and powerlessness - we want to hope for a happy ending, but it was not spelled out in the writers' plans.

Frank McGuire

A real storm of emotions is causing viewers to watch the film “Sanctum”. Richard Roxburgh played the role of head of the expedition, Frank McGuire. The endless labyrinth of caves and lack of oxygen can drive even the most experienced diver crazy, but Frank manages to remain calm, because the fate of the rest of the team, one of which is his own son, depends on him.

The first education that the Australian actor received did not come into contact with the world of art. Two years after graduation, Roxburgh became a graduate of a theater institute.

A career in television began in 1987, and only thirteen years later the whole world heard about Richard Roxburgh. First, the role in the action movie “Mission Impossible - 2” attracted attention, then there were the projects “Moulin Rouge”, “Van Helsing”, “League of Outstanding Gentlemen”.

Josh

Together with Frank, his son Josh participated in the research. Reese Wakefield began to shoot in the film “Sanctum” by an experienced actor. The Australian began his career in college, where he studied thanks to a scholarship.

The first major project was the series “Home and On the Road” (2005-2008). However, the popularity and nomination in the category "Best Actor" Reese Wakefield brought the main role in the film "The Black Ball", which was presented at the Berlin Film Festival.

Two years later, the Australian actor began filming with one of the most influential directors in Hollywood. Despite the quality and latest technology, in the film “Sanctum” the actors give much more emotions and tension. Actually this is not a banal story telling the viewer about people in a trap.

The main character is not the leader of the group, Frank, but his son. Due to the circumstances, Josh had to turn from a boy into a real man, capable of making difficult decisions.

Before the fear of death

“Sanctum” is a film that once again shows us human weaknesses. In a critical situation, some people show courage, courage and self-sacrifice, while others get betrayal and cowardice.

Unfortunately, losses in the caver group are predictable. Tragic accident, decompression sickness, and rocks - death follows the heels of researchers step by step. The hope of salvation remains only with Josh and Frank, who by chance meet a crazy participant in the expedition - financier Carl Haley. It was the millionaire who sponsored such extreme entertainment.

The audience could see Joan Griffith in the projects “Titanic”, “Fantastic Four”, “King Arthur”, “Fireflies in the Garden” and “Obnoxious Bosses”. The debut in the movie for the 13-year-old Joan was the soap opera People of the Valley. After studying at the Academy of Dramatic Art, Griffith continued his career in film and television.
