Postcoital discharge (blood after the act)

In some women, there is blood after the act, such discharge is called postcoital (contact) bleeding. Even scarce bleeding immediately after sexual intercourse is not the norm, this is a serious reason to consult a gynecologist for a diagnosis. The causes of such pathologies can be different. For example, with cervical erosion, bleeding occurs not only after sex, therefore, discharge that is not related to menstruation should alert a woman if this is not the first sexual intercourse.

First penetration, why is there blood?

With defloration of the hymen, volumetric vaginal bleeding may occur, because vessels and capillaries circulate in it. The shape and thickness of this membrane is individual for everyone, so not every girl can experience pain and blood loss when it ruptures. From a physiological point of view, bleeding after rupture of the hymen is a completely normal process that disappears after a few days and does not require medical intervention. Although in some cases these symptoms may not be present during defloration of the film, this is usually due to the frequent use of tampons, an individual peculiarity of the hymen (too thin), injury to the film during sports or masturbation.

Blood after intercourse: the main causes

One of the most common causes is an STD (chlamydia, trichomoniasis, gardenereles, gonorrhea and other genital infections). All infectious diseases provoke an inflammatory and adhesion process in the fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, appendages. At the first signs of the disease, it is better not to self-medicate and not to postpone a visit to a medical institution.

The following causes of blood-causing after the act are inflammatory diseases:

  • endometritis - an inflammatory process of the internal endometrium of the uterus (mucous membrane) ;
  • cervitis - a disease of the uterus or cervix;
  • vaginitis (colpitis) - inflammation of the vagina;
  • cystitis.

Less commonly, postcoital bleeding occurs with pathological abnormalities in the cells of the uterus, cancer of the uterus, and blood diseases. For example, with dysplasia of the cervix , its cells change, it greatly increases in size, loses its shape and stratification.

With polyps (benign neoplasms) of the uterus, blood also flows after sex, because at the slightest mechanical impact, the growths are damaged and bleed.

In addition to pathologies and genital infections, blood after the act can go as a result of taking medications that are not suitable for individual indicators. Also, oral contraceptives, or rather, a tablet not taken on time, can provoke the appearance of bloody discharge just after intercourse. Genital trauma or rough sex is one of the causes of postcoital bleeding.

Very often in the first semester of pregnancy, slight dark spotting is observed , this may be due to a global restructuring of the female body or to complications. In any case, a doctor’s consultation is necessary, otherwise the risk of miscarriage increases.

Every woman should know that blood should not go after the act in the absence of diseases, especially if bleeding is accompanied by acute pain, this can indicate a ruptured cyst or ovary. Often during anal sex, the rectal mucosa is damaged, and spotting appears, if you do not contact a proctologist, this can cause negative consequences.

Sometimes blood drops are present in male sperm and, getting into the vagina, a woman has post-coital discharge. In this situation, it is better for both partners to undergo an examination.
