Before the novel lifted her to the pinnacle of fame, the girl lived a rich and varied life. The diagnosis of dyslexia, made to her back in school, seemed to put an end to her dream of a career as a novelist, but Fanny (then Patricia Neal) took fate into her own hands and signed up for a theater troupe. After studying at the university, she connected herself with television for a rather long time: she wrote scripts, performed episodic roles in various shows, and even starred in several films (“Stay Hungry”, “A Woman Without Rules”). Subsequently, when Flagg had to make a choice, she nevertheless settled on literature.

The events described in the novel unfold in 1985 in America, more precisely, in the provincial town of Birmingham. The central character of the book is Evelyn Couch, a housewife. Her mother-in-law is spending her last days in a nursing home. Despite this, women have a rather tense relationship. There, Evelyn meets another inhabitant of this dull place - Ninnie Treadgood, who tells the heroine the story of her life in Polustank (a real town in Alabama). Essentially, "Fried green tomatoes ”can be called a book on a midlife crisis: Evelyn’s children have long grown up and become independent, their relationship with her husband is falling apart, every morning a woman begins with thoughts of loneliness and death. Is 48 years really the end of life, and all that remains for her now is to destroy in huge quantities chocolate bars and to plunge deeper into the abyss of longing? It was in such a difficult period that Evelyn met Ninnie - she also went a difficult life, but did not allow herself to give up. Having lost both parents early, widowed, left with an inferior son in her arms, Ninnie never ceased to thank fate for the opportunity to breathe, laugh, and rejoice. Communicating with Ninny helps Evelyn see all the events happening to her in a different light. Gradually, real friendship develops between the women.
