Horror films of the 90s: highlights of the "second tier"

By the will of fate in the categories of "best of the best" are usually mentioned to all known horror. But what should a fan of the genre who has reviewed them all and wants something from the same series, but undeservedly forgotten or not so popular? For such a viewer, it is worth recommending viewing horror films of the 90s (foreign and domestic), which are excellent examples of this genre and can claim the title of cult horror of the 90s, but of the "second tier". This publication will not mention “Scream”, “Something”, “The Evil Dead” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street” - here are paintings that deserve the attention of the viewer, but at one time overshadowed by more promoted horror films.

Not Climbing the Hollywood Olympus

The notorious Hollywood Olympus is a shaky place, whose favorites in the blink of an eye become outsiders. For example, the once-in-demand William Fridkin, who directed the “French Connector” and “The Exorcist”, made a number of mistakes, as a result of which his next project “Guardian” (“Sentinel”) has an IMDb rating of 5.30 and is almost unknown to a wide audience, although the tape is worth a look because of the extraordinary plot.

Tony Randall, who set the Pincer horror, also has more significant projects like HellRaiser 2 or the sixth episode of the Amityville Horror movie. “Ticks”, although they turned out to be quite “watchable”, fascinating and bloody, were not included in the well-known list called “The Best Horror Films of the 90s”. By the way, the future offspring of Dr. Evil from Austin Powers, young Seth Green, was illuminated in the picture.

Zombies and Demons

When listing horror films of the 90s, one cannot forget the Night of the Living Dead (IMDb: 6.90), directed by Tom Savini. Of course, the remake is inferior to the "cult" zombie horror George Romero, however, it is worth recommending to watch it. Director Savini is better known as a makeup specialist, but he decided on a directorial debut with guaranteed support for Romero, who acted as a producer. The director emphasized graphic violence and brutality, as a result, at the insistence of censorship, the tape had to be cut.

Many horror films of the 90s were remakes of paintings of the 60s and 70s or natural clones, such as the horror film directed by Charles Philip Moore called “Demon Wind”. The film has an indescribable resemblance to the painting "The Night of the Demons" by Kevin Tenney. Both horrors have a group of young people in the center of the story, staying in a strange house, which is gradually enveloped in a thick fog, with which evil and bloodthirsty entities penetrate our world.

Also a remake of the 60s film is John Carpenter's film (Escape from Los Angeles, Vampires, In the Maw of Madness) called Village of the Damned. The project is far from a masterpiece, of course, but it looks easy thanks to the Carpenter's “signature” atmosphere.

Harbingers

Horror films of the 80s and 90s often become harbingers for the formation of a whole subgenre. For example, the Popcorn slasher is the forerunner of the Scream franchise. According to the plot, during a night horror film festival a maniac appears, killing the students who organized this event. At the box office, the picture failed, but lovers of unpretentious slashers may like it.

Due to the tremendous success of The Lawnmower Man, almost every 90s film exaggerated the theme of virtual reality. The horror film “Brain Scan” was no exception. He tells the story of a “live” video game connecting virtual and our reality. One presumptuous player does all sorts of obscenities within the project, not realizing that everything is really happening.

Unlike other paintings, the horror film "Wishmaster" not only recouped its budget, but also spawned three more episodes of the sequel. The tape is notable for its bizarre makeup and the presence of held movie stars in secondary roles.

Adaptations

When calling horror films of the 90s, the list must include the adaptation of the novel by W. Smith “Thor”, the brainchild of Eric Red “The Bad Moon” and the project based on the eponymous novel by S. King “Losing Weight”.

The first horror movie is notable for the fact that in it the narrative comes from the face of the dog. On this, everything original in the movie ends: according to the plot of the protagonist, the werewolf bites, and now he poses a real threat to his family and friends.

Director Holl coped with the film adaptation of King Horror King’s work confidently, which is not surprising since he gained experience filming the original Night of Fear and Children's Game (the first part about the adventures of the Chucky doll). The story of a cynical lawyer who has inadvertently crossed the road to gypsies is worth a look.

Almost masterpieces

The selection of horrors of the 90s continues the project of Guillermo Del Toro's "Mutants" about giant cockroaches that are about to arrange an expansion into the world outside the sewer. Everything is wonderful in the cinema regarding acting casting: Jeremy Northam, Mira Sorvino and Josh Brolin starred in the film . The narrative is without sagging, but the recognizable style and atmosphere of the director is considered the main advantage.

Horror “Eater” is not inferior in power - an unexpectedly witty tape that takes the viewer to the middle of the XIX century. The story underlying the picture is truly creepy. Starring Robert Carlisle and Guy Pearce.

Domestic horror films of the 90s

In the 90s, domestic cinematographers did not know how to make horror films, as abroad, for them it was a new genre, so the paintings created at the end of the perestroika era had a unique style. Unfortunately, many of them are forgotten, others really do not stand up to criticism, but there are some projects that can scare. The following is a list of underrated horror films of the post-Soviet period:

  • "Mr. Designer" (1988).
  • “The Ghoul Family” (1990).
  • “Thirst for passion” (1991).
  • “Lumi” (1991).
  • “Drinkers of Blood” (1991).
  • The Gongofer (1992).
  • “Touch” (1992).
