Long gone are the days when, in order to pass the evening watching a movie, you had to run to video rental. Today on the Internet there are enough videos for every taste that can be downloaded to your computer in just a couple of minutes.
But in addition to the name and brief annotation of the film, you will definitely see a number of obscure letters such as "camrip proper, ts, dvdscr" and the like. What are these initiate codes? After reading this article, you will join the ranks of those who can extract quite specific and useful information from such abbreviations.
What is meant by the verb "ripping"
Ripping is a transliteration of the English word, which means "open." At its core, this action involves decryption or even hacking of the information stream with its subsequent transcoding.
You can visualize this in the following way: suppose you own Morse code. Sitting in your room, you get a light signal of a certain content from the window of the neighboring house. What can be done with the information received? You can write down with a pen on a piece of paper, transmit it by voice, draw or tap on the wall with the same Morse code. Thus, you transcode the information into a format convenient for you.
Something similar happens when ripping. And that is precisely why the letters “rip” will be present in almost every abbreviation that we will consider. This means that the information has been transcoded.
What is transcoding for?
Why do you need to transcode the movie? In the vast majority of cases, this is done in order to reduce the file size. Thanks to compression, you can achieve significant savings in computer memory. In addition, before transcoding files can be opened in a limited number of programs, and when ripping, by default they are transcoded into public formats.
CAMRip PROPER - what quality?
Tracks with this designation are removed directly from a place in the cinema. Both the image and the sound are recorded on the camcorder by the viewer. CAMRip PROPER is considered the least quality recording. The sound is often illegible, the image loses most of the colors, and extraneous noise in the form of silhouettes of heads moving around the auditorium and savory blowing of nose somewhere on the next row is far from uncommon.
Who needs movies as a CAMRip PROPER? Most often, impatient fans who agree to endure all these disgraces, but to find out why the next widely publicized blockbuster is so good.
And if you peer into the very essence of the designations indicated for the evaluation of downloaded films, then this reminds a kind of warning - "Camrip proper", that they are not responsible for the quality. In people, such a resolution is called a "screen."
Is there really an improvement?
On the Internet you can find explanations that CAMRip PROPER is not just a “screen”. On the one hand, this is indeed so. The prefix “proper” in relation to any release shows an improvement in the quality of this product compared to the source.
But what does this mean in practice? After seeing the laid out track of the new film on the Internet as CAMRip and making sure that the person filming it was holding the camera on his outstretched arm, and he had to periodically adjust the focus, another video pirate of our time goes hunting.
He takes a good video camera, a small tripod and goes to the nearest movie theater. Having settled down comfortably in the depths of the auditorium, this undoubtedly more technically well-equipped representative of the fighters for free viewing of films undertakes to create a pirate track in which the quality of CAMRip PROPER will be.
Arriving home and exposing the fruits of his labor on the Internet, he rightfully adds the designation “proper” to the technical description of the release. This is what CAMRip PROPER really is. But as you know, the presence of a tripod does not affect either the sneezing of nearby moviegoers or the walking of people who are late to the start of the session in front of the camera.
What does TS mean?
But the quality with the designation “TS” is really somewhat better than CAMRip, although it is also removed from the screen in a movie theater. The trick is that this shooting is carried out in an empty room with a professional movie camera installed directly in the projection booth.
The sound on the video track is not superimposed from the microphones built into the camcorder, but is transferred in digital format from the audio track of the original recording. Thanks to this, the sound in recordings marked “TS” is incomparably better than that of CAMRip.
Pirates in the law
Nowadays, any film that is due to be released soon has its own promotional version. These copies are intended for people closely associated with the world of the film industry. For example, selected film critics must receive them.
So, these promotional versions are copied and get on the Internet with the designation dvdscr. These are good quality videos with clear sound and picture. But to stop their distribution, publishers provide such recordings with a multitude of subtitles, which warn that this version is not intended for distribution and copying. In addition, color may disappear while watching a movie in the most unexpected places. This is done intentionally to prevent unauthorized reproduction of copies.
Good quality in the public domain
When the premiere period passes, and the movie goes on sale on DVD-ROMs, these recordings are immediately ripped. The original disc with the film is taken and compressed to the desired size. As a rule, a popular media container with the extension “avi” is used. This is what dvdrip is - the most common abbreviation on releases. The size of this rip is about 1.4 gigabytes.
DVDRip quality is consistently high. Only some compression of the picture can be considered a drawback . Usually DVDRip contains a frame size of 720x40. But if you are not going to watch this recording on a screen the size of a third of the wall, then the difference is unlikely to be felt.
Attracting Digital Television
You can still often see the designation HDTVRip. It means that the original source of video and audio tracks is high-quality digital television (HD - high definition, TV - television).
These records are obtained by intercepting the flow of information transmitted by a digital television channel. They are distinguished by good image clarity (when encoding in HDTVRip, frame compression is not performed) and excellent sound. The only drawback may be the presence on the recording of the logo of the TV channel from which the source was taken.
World Wide Web Resources
Now broadcasts of various programs and videos are carried out not only by television companies, but also directly on the Internet. These broadcasts are recorded, processed and made available for download marked WEB-DLRip. Such records simply are not bad. They have a great picture and wonderful sound. There are no side effects in the form of inscriptions.
Blu-ray technology
But there is no limit to perfection. No matter how great the WEB-DLRip format is, there is a release that is of even higher quality. This is BDRip. Its name stands for recording made from a Blu-ray disc.
Blu-ray technology is currently the most advanced in terms of creating a high-density video stream. The fact that a regular Blu-ray disc has a size of 25 gigabytes already says a lot. But a standard film as a Blu-ray, as a rule, is recorded on a two-layer disc, the capacity of which is 50 gigabytes.
Ripping a Blu-ray disc allows you to create a high-quality release that "weighs" five times less than the source. And thanks to this, BDRip leads the race for the highest quality distribution.
Cases of days gone by
However, against the background of all these sparkling high-quality recordings, there is peacefully another view, which is simply not to be ignored. This is VHSRip. The image on it is often grayish and nondescript. It is often accompanied by noise on the screen and not always a good sound. However, these records not only do not disappear, but also continue to be distributed on the Internet.
What is the secret? We are talking about recordings that originally existed only on VHS tapes and were not previously digitized in good quality. Most often they contain recordings of television series that were broadcast in the 80s and 90s.
Here takes its nostalgia. And the viewer agrees meekly to endure the ripples on the screen in order to relive the ups and downs, meetings and partings with the heroes of Santa Barbara. This American series was able to become a symbol of the era in the countries of the former Soviet Union. And he is able to awaken childhood memories along with old, still black and white tales about brother Ivanushka and sister Alyonushka.
For these reasons, records modestly labeled with the letters VHSRip will last for more than a year.
