On the shelves of pharmacies you can see a huge variety of syrups, tablets, drops, potions and lozenges, which are used to treat respiratory diseases. Each of these medicines has its own properties, but one of the best herbal remedies for coughing in children is Prospan (syrup or tablets).

The composition of the drug

It consists of an extract of dry ivy leaves, which allows you to relieve bronchial spasm and improve sputum separation, making it less viscous.

Auxiliary ingredients in the Prospan preparation (syrup) are anhydrous citric acid, xanthan gum, potassium sorbate, 70% sorbitol solution, cherry flavor, purified water.

Auxiliary elements: tablets contain anhydrous citric acid, saccharin sodium, glycerol stearate, anhydrous sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium cyclamate, mannitol, simethicone, medium chain triglycerides, flavoring.

Prospan tablets and syrup do not contain alcohol.

Cough Syrup

Indications for use:

  • respiratory disease treatment;
  • disease of the respiratory tract, accompanied by a strong cough with hard to separate thick sputum;
  • chronic and acute bronchitis;
  • bronchial obstruction syndrome;
  • bronchial asthma.

A course of treatment

The attending physician individually prescribes the course of taking the drug. It depends on the nature of the symptoms of the disease and the course of the pathological process. The duration of therapy is at least a week. To achieve a lasting effect after eliminating the signs of the disease, treatment with Prospan (syrup) is extended for 2-3 days.

Contraindications for use:

The preparation "Prospan" (syrup) does not contain dyes, sugar and alcohol, but to get the active ingredient of ivy extract, 30% ethanol is used. During drying, it completely evaporates from the extract. For safety reasons, do not recommend giving to children under four years of age. In addition, no studies have been conducted to determine the effect of the drug on women during pregnancy and breastfeeding mothers. Therefore, it should be used in these cases only as directed by the doctor.

Side effects

Cough syrup "Prospan" is well tolerated by children, in rare cases it can cause a laxative effect (upset stool). This is due to the sorbitol content in the preparation. If you exceed the dosage by more than 3 times, diarrhea or nausea may occur. In this case, symptomatic therapy is performed.

Additional Information

Cough syrup and Prospan tablets should be stored at a temperature of 22-25 degrees.
